1. The Technology is Already Encrypted
Modern contactless cards (the ones with the "wave" symbol) use EMV technology. Unlike the old magnetic strips that broadcast your actual card number, the chip creates a one-time unique code for every transaction.
- They would not get your name, your address, or the 3-digit CVV security code on the back.
2. Skimming is "Theoretically Possible, Practically Rare"To scan your card, a thief would need to get an industrial-strength reader within a few inches of your pocket without you noticing.
- The Real Danger: Digital thieves prefer much easier methods, like large-scale database hacks or "shimming" (placing a device inside a gas pump or ATM reader).
3. Most "Chip" Cards Aren't Even RFIDIt's important to distinguish between the two types of chips:
- Contactless (Tap-to-Pay): Only these use RFID/NFC technology. Even then, your wallet's leather or fabric already provides a natural (though partial) dampening of the signal.
