Good deal, but if you need a little more space it looks like the 4x4 goes on sale for $85-88 every so often!

how do you avoid damaging the table when drilling holes, especially when using a hole saw?

Use a spacer(s)/waste peice or drill over the edge.

I agree, this stand is made of steel and is quite heavy. Vevor makes folding work stands made from aluminum, FYI. And their prices aren't bad.

I bought the larger 4x8 size a while back and it came with the flat non-slip inserts. Looks like this one doesn't have those. They really help keep plywood from sliding around.

It's not really a table, it's just the support structure. So, just don't drill directly over one of the legs!

Since it sounds like a few people have these - how are they for lateral/horizontal movement (i.e. if you walked on one and shifted your weight around, is it fairly stable laterally)? Looking for something to use as a temporary drum (instrument, not container) riser, so the 1500 lb weight isn't a concern but there's a lot of forward/backward movement on a drum riser when it's in use and I'd hate to see the thing just collapse.

A few things for you to consider:
  1. These tables need a perfectly flat floor to sit evenly without taking on slightly skew shapes.
  2. That flat floor also needs to be level for the load to be born correctly.
  3. A very heavy load needs to be well- distributed. Each leg can hold maybe 250 lbs straight down
  4. You will need a top that can support weight across the ~24" spans between the uprights without cracking or flexing too much. I've stood on my worktop, which is rigid foam and Masonite sandwiched to make a fake torsion box. It's only 1.5" thick and I have to keep my feet close to the positions of the uprights.
  5. With a floating top simply resting on top, the assembly shifts, flexes, and distorts easily. Which is not necessarily a problem for a work table but would be with an active drummer. The bora matching work tops lock into the caps on the uprights and make the assembly far more rigid. Whatever top you go with, you will need to lock it in in a similar way.
  6. I don't think they are very stable laterally, but tying them into the top would be a huge improvement in this regard. Even so, if you have a drummer who jumps off things, or band members knock into things, who fall over and flail around, this is probably not the thing.
  7. There are mobile stage setups used by rental companies that have a similar deployment method. they cost more but they do exactly the thing you are looking to do.
