The entire point of these is an alternative to using arcade sticks in fighting games. Separate movement inputs offer several speed advantages in inputting motions. Also fun to play platformers on.

i too find it is odd, but keep in mind that this is for pro players, feel free to go to Evo and see how many people play with those.

People have fine tuned their inputs with key strokes over stick movements and fatigue. I remember playing street fighter on the PC without a controller and realized people actually are pro with keyboard. So these tap pads make sense ergonomically.
