FWIW, I received this laptop a few weeks ago from Acer. Purchased from the Ultra 5 32GB deal, the specs didn't jive since the Ultra 5 doesn't do 32GB of ram. Acer via PM provided me a model number for a Ultra 9 but received this A14-52MT-701K (Ultra 7 258V), I still consider it a win but would have liked the U9 better Wink
I did piss and moan a little after purchase (out of principle mainly), Acer ended up refunding $40 being they did tell me the wrong thing, they clearly didn't want to do a return either. First few messages from them were AI nonsense or just random copy / pastes.

Testing against my old Lenovo Flex 5 8845HS with 16GB of ram; This Acer is about twice as fast in a few games (for example Far Cry 5 gets double the FPS) and Switch emulation is much stronger. Now never drops below 60 FPS where the 8845HS stayed there....most of the time.

Screen is pretty lackluster in terms of color against my old non-OLED Flex 5 (comparable to my work Dell Latitude 5440). Plenty bright, speakers MUCH LOUDER. Lenovo was super quiet. No SD or micro SD card slot though. Acer also has a lot of annoying stuff installed like AdobeOP which keeps bothering me buy something but I cannot figure out how to remove it (without simply removing the exe that is starting). msconfig nor start up (in task manager) appear to be pointing to it and no Adobe items are in Add / Remove Programs.

Laptop arrived brand new appearing, plain box, and charger, nothing more.

I had this laptop. Specs aside, it felt very cheap. Very plasticy build quality and the keyboard feel wasn't great if you care about those things.

The 45% NTSC aside, the 32 GB LPDDR5X-8533 is definitely tempting.

How much did you pay in that deal to get this laptop? Do you have any other complaints about its quality or otherwise, and do you think this current price is a good deal for this laptop?
After tax it was $499, $40 less after the partial refund for the CPU mix up. It was from the below deal, second option. The "Intel Ultra 5 226V, 32GB", which couldn't have been correct since the ram was 32GB. It was either a U7 or U9 (assuming the RAM wasn't the part that was wrong)

The laptop is fantastic. Only thing is the screen isn't great but honestly I'd rather a mid screen and a great machine vs a mid machine with a great screen. The lack of an SD slot is annoying too since I am always messing with retro handhelds, loading roms, etc, but I always have a hub with me so it isn't an end of the world type thing.

Shoot for this price I'd just get it and swap out the panel for a nice 1600p OLED myself!

Unless that was somehow impossible... In that case I'd be very sad.

Just yesterday I picked up the Ultra 5 226V, 16GB ram version of this from Costco for $500. Comparison sites seem to suggest this one does not perform much differently, but now I've got a little buyer's remorse. What do y'all think? New Ultra 5, 16GB vs Refurb Ultra 7, 32 GB.
Win 11 with only 16gb should be banned.

Personally I would probably return it and order the refurb, but real world you are probably not going to notice a difference so if it's not worth the hassle to you, don't feel bad about not messing with it.
I echo this, the refurb I picked up from ebay showed no signs of use and one single cycle on the battery. I am pretty sure they are just Costco returns.

I could not live with a display that poor. Kudos to those who can.
Totally agree. The screen is the most important thing on a laptop. It's literally the thing you spend hours looking at. No point in buy a latest gen processor and hefty RAM when it's powering something that's hard on your eyes.

What do you do on your laptop that makes this display unacceptable? Watching videos and/or gaming? I would be using it just for 'work' and personal use, like internet browsing and reading, Word and Excel, very occasional YouTube, etc. For day to day stuff would you consider it alright or is it just that bad?
Honestly, (IMO) the screen makes a laptop a joy or a chore to use. Most recent, decent processors will do all those things you list, but if the screen is washed out and lifeless, then looking at photos you took will be worse than a phone, or YouTube or surfing the web just looks uninspiring, and can be hard on your eyes, etc. a laptop like this isn't going to play AAA games very well, but some Indy games can be really beautiful and it would also look washed out. it's also bad for text and spreadsheets, and 300 nits isn't good enough to use in rooms with bright sunlight.
I'd argue that as long as the system is good enough for YouTube and ten browser tabs, then the next most important thing is the screen, then keyboard and trackpad, then sound. These are the human interface points on a computer. Way more important than if the occasional intensive task completes in 2 seconds or 4 seconds.

Can you comment on fan noise? Is it generally off? Or turns on at the drop off a hat? Can run office without the fan? Etc. Thanks in advance.

I haven't really noticed the fan at all except when I was benchmarking a few games. But to be fair, I not overly sensitive to the fan noise in general unless it randomly kicks on out of the blue then I'll notice it. So you might not want to take my opinion too seriously regarding noise. That being said, I think the fan is off 99% of the time during normal Office / Youtube / SlickDeals arguing sessions Wink

FWIW, I've been mostly running the laptop on the middle setting (balanced) of the AcerSense power options, there is also "quiet" and "performance."

I will say though, the laptop does have a little lip running across the entire bottom, tilting it backwards every so slightly so the bottom does not lay flat against surfaces. My Lenovo 2-in-1 would sit flush against a table to the point (in my mind) could block the fan's inlet air. On a bed it would actually get alarmingly hot unless I had something under the laptop. (not blaming the laptop) The Acer gets better airflow just because of that lip so may help with temps / fan noise.

this image (not mine) perhaps will illustrate what I am talking about

Acer and ebay. Couldn't get much worse. The pc will be a POS, acer won't help, neither will ebay. Good luck with that.
I just went through this whole ordeal with Acer. Bought the other core 5 one, sold as new. But literally a bunch ring chips on both sides of the touch pad, also somehow the person chipped the hinge on the inside. Externally it looked new. Opened it was good at best. They offered $40 discount to keep. I was about to suck it up. Then I turned it on and some cat hair came out. I was done with it.

I dont disagree but the screen isn't THAT bad. I have a similarly dull screen on the HP elite book deal (with the ryzen 5660u) that keeps coming back to SD. It gets the job done so long as it isn't compared to a better screen. It isn't like it's a TN screen.

Bear in mind that many of the most beloved Thinkpads did (and do) have horrendous, truly bad screens. Smearing, low brightness, not laminated so you see a big ass gap under the screen etc.

I think build quality is most important...you touch the laptop Everytime you interact with it, and if you got keyboard flex, or the screen hinges feel squeaky, or if it doesn't open and close with one finger, you hate it every single second...and even connecting it to an external monitor doesn't fix those.

That being said...one thing this laptop does do very well is compare well against all of the Mini PC deals where people are nitpicking over 16 gigs of memory, 2020 CPUs, etc. you could leave this machine in a corner docked and get all of the fixins (minus oculink)...and (less subpar) support than the Chinese OEMs...and 2 year warranty.

Unless you're using it docked to an external screen, your laptop screen is crucial. I love this deal but I'm not sure I want to stare at a screen like this for movies, light gaming, or even Internet browsing:
"colors are visibly dull; in our tests, the Aspire 14 AI could only reproduce 57.9% of the sRGB color gamut, while coverage of the Adobe RGB and DCI-P3 gamuts was stuck at the 40 to 41% mark." (From one review)

I really appreciate all the helpful opinions and comments in this thread. I had tried to respond earlier but SD error'd out my response and I lost it. At the time I said I was still up in the air about keeping the order and that I could maybe run out to Costco or Best Buy to see the screen in person. In the end, I'm just too lazy to do that this week and rather than being potentially unhappy and having to pay for that mistake I requested an order cancellation. Ultimately the idea that the screen is the thing you use the absolute most on a laptop hard to argue with. Keeping fingers crossed for another good SD.

Curious about the actual condition. Other listings usually say "Good", "Very Good", "Excellent", etc. This one just says "Certified - Refurbished". Returns are buyer pays for shipping, so it's not really a wait and see kind of thing when you're on the hook to pay for sending it back if it's not up to par.

Specs are great. Of course it's going to be a cheaper laptop, it's Acer. The real question is the condition it arrives in.I've been waiting for this to come back in stock: https://www.ebay.com/itm/277168045226
That laptop is showing in stock for me right now
