If you buy uncut bagels at Costco this thing is a lifesaver! Easy to use and much safer than trying to freehand cut one with a knife.

I don't like having a lot of unitaskers in my kitchen but this is absolutely worth the counter space.

Just stand the bagel up on a cutting board and slice straight down with a serrated knife.

I got one of these after finding how easy and great homemade bagels are - but how tough they can be to cut. This thing sucks. It just mashes and mushes your bagels. Even crappy storebought ones.

Thank you for the comment. I usually buy Costco ones and the bread knife gets harder to use.

If it's mashing them you should try changing your technique. I had the same problem with some brands of bagel that are soft and fluffy (not semi-hard like a boiled bagel should be) and for those I slooooowly push the blade in 1/2 of the way, then pull the bagel out, flip it, and slooooowly push it in half way on the opposite side.

It's not perfect, and you have to experiment a little bit to figure out what works best for you and the type of bagels you buy, but I still find it very useful and a lot easier and safer than cutting bagels with a bread knife.

Did you just say "easy" and "homemade bagels" together?

I'm all ears. Well versed home cook without the patience for typical baking recipes outside of simple french loaf, white bread etc.

Can you actually make decent bagels at home without tons of steps? Love to know the process and try it. We buy bagels once every few weeks at a NY bakery and they're amazing... the process to making a good one always seemed more complex than I wanted to deal with.

Seriously. This thing would be great if you were a deli and had a couple hundred bagels to cut a day. If you're cutting a few any serrated/bread knife will do just fine.

I bought one of these after cutting my hand with my bread knife. Costco bagels (the cheese kind) are often slightly too large for it, but they work great for the regular grocery store bagels. Been using it 4-5 times a week for about 6 years now, no problems.
