LEGO art sets have special hanging pieces on the back of the set that allows you to hang it on nails on the wall. Yes, the minifig and easel hangs out of the painting.

If I were to hang this on the wall, I'd probably 3d print a custom shelf just big enough for the figure and easel then mount it under the frame part. Could always just put the whole thing on a generic shelf that is deep enough but that would obstruct the view quite a bit more than I'd care for. or, you could make a custom shaped shelf for the whole scene out of some kind of solid wood and use a jigsaw to cut the desired shape/footprint

The mini fig and easel part don't have to be attached. Look at pictures people uploaded with their reviews on Amazon.

Thank you that's been my hesitation for this particular model. Are there alternative instructions that don't include that build out given? I've been waiting for the Vincent Van Gogh Sunflowers lego set to show up with a deal.

Its completely trivial to not attach the arm that extends out with the platform for Van Gogh and his isle. You would literally just skip one step where its attach to the bottom of the frame by a single rod through hole connection.

You can hang it on the wall with built in LEGO hanging brackets (would need nails or similar to grab on the anchor holes). I just set my frame on a table is it stands upright on its own as the frame is fairly long and thick.
