I have these headphones and I love them. I use them on planes and with playing something, all engine noise disappears. I am 45, so YMMV.

I bought these as an upgrade from my Sony WH-1000XM5's because I was excited about the LE Audio connectivity, thinking it would allow me to game and use the microphone at the same time with full quality audio (with traditional Bluetooth, the audio quality drops dramatically whenever the mic is active, and LE Audio is purported to fix this).

Unfortunately, I was overly optimistic. First, enabling LE Audio in Windows is only possible in rare circumstances where the OEM provided driver indicates LE Audio support, even if the underlying chipset is rated for Bluetooth 5.2+. Secondly, even if your computer supports it or you buy a secondary dongle, the audio quality still drops terribly when the mic is active.

I will spare all the details but check out the Reddit thread "WH-1000XM6 via LC3 - a limited experience for gaming" for more of a breakdown.

Overall, I found nothing in the Sony WH-1000XM6's to be a worthwhile upgrade without working LE Audio and returned them. I'll continue with my Sony WH-1000XM5's (and an external mic for gaming) for the foreseeable future.

It's crazy that it is so hard to find an all-around good quality gaming headset with microphone built-in. I was in the same exact boat as you with Sony WH-1000XM5, but I also needed something compatible to use with my Xbox One X in addition to my PC, while also keeping latency in check. That left me with having to get an external mic for my PC, and I would still have to keep using my old HyperX Cloud Alpha for my Xbox. That didn't work for me, I don't like clutter and I just want one headset that does it all, so instead I opted for the Astro A50 X which I can use on my PC and Xbox One X. Mic quality is great and so is the sound quality. I was able to find several people on OfferUp and FB Marketplace selling very good condition units for $200-$250.

Overall I am very happy with the purchase. They are not as comfortable as the Sony's, but that is a tall task for anything.

Thanks! I was just going to ask if it is worth the upgrade over the XM5s. Sounds like its not a big enough jump.

Similar situation. I have some WH-1000XM3's and was very close to upgrading to the XM6's. Main reason was "LE Audio", so I didn't get that massive quality degradation when the mic comes on. Then I learned macOS doesn't support it at all with no plans to my knowledge. It's impressive that reasonable quality calls with bluetooth headphones is still not a thing in 2026 without the use of janky dongles.

Just ordered and seeing this really disappoints me. Have you tried alternative A2DP driver to force LE during gaming? I ordered these because my XM3's have this exact issue, and was hoping the XM6s would solve it

I've tried every dongle and driver. If you're lucky enough that your chipset allows you to use LE in Windows or with the FMA120 dongle, you can stay in LE audio mode while gaming, but there is an inherent limitation in the WH-1000XM6s that they still drop into 32 kHz audio the moment the mic is activated. You can literally listen to audio recordings that Reddit user put up in the post "WH-1000XM6 via LC3 - a limited experience for gaming."

So, you might enjoy the XM6s over the XM3s since you're quite a few generations behind, but I promise you that you will not find a way to have simultaneous audio and mic quality (unless Sony releases a firmware update that resolves this, but there is no indication to hope that's coming)

Yeah my computer supports LC3 without a dongle or anything. This was the biggest frusteration with the XM3 and my disappointment is immeasurable. I would even be fine if windows made it super simple to permanently enable handsfree telephony and allow me to quickly toggle it on or off, but it is always a rick roll to go in and change it, disconnect and re-pair, and sometimes it just randomly turns on..... so its literally a gamble everytime I fire up a game if I'm going to have to go through the oakie doke again.
