Do you jump around every year or two? I've been with T-mobile for 20+ years. Not because I'm loyal to them, but because I have so many grandfathered deals that keep them VERY competitive against their newer plans or other carriers.
I jump minimum once a year.

I got the text message and played around with the ordering with an iPhone SE2 as trade in. Looks like it is free and without changing plans.

Edit: In case if anyone is wondering. I'm on a legacy One plan.

You can try to do a test buy to see if your account is targeted. I do not see the offer in my T-life nor in the promotions list during shopping; however, doing a test upgrade on one of my lines through t-mobile website, I get $800 upgrade offer even after reporting my trade-in device is completely broken. Same R499 offer on T-life app if you prefer the app, but you have to do a test upgrade first.

Device Condition
Device does not power on and stay on
Had liquid damage or internal moisture
Front display is cracked or damaged

Promotion
Applied

On Us with any condition trade.
Recurring promotional savings: $799.99
Credit of $33.34 over 24 months

If you cancel before 24 credits, credits stop and balance on required finance agreement may be due; contact us. For well-qualified customers, plus tax. See promotion details

You might be on to something. I attempted a test buy with trade in myself when I saw this post and didn't get the deal. But an hour or two later, I got that text message that the deal was available for me. Could be coincidental but maybe someone else might want to try this.

This is worth the hassle if you plan to stay with T-Mobile in the near future AND plan to use the device. I did a similar deal for Pixel 9 Pro XL last year. Halfway done with the installments. The phone is locked until it is paid off. You cannot pay off early. You cannot sell the device. You can sell, but you need to let them know the phone is still under EIP, and that the buyer needs to trust you will continue making payments.
My phone is just sitting in the drawer collecting dust. Good for a backup phone, though, if needed. But I doubt how much value will be left after I can finally sell it. It's already down to $500 if sold today unlocked.

Yeah, I figure an iPhone deal will come up eventually. Not worth tying down my only line without an EIP just for an Android (+tax).

Been with T-Mo for 5 years and I don't recall there were ever a deal on Iphones that doesn't require adding a line + trade any phone/any condition.

Weird. I just got four iPhone 17s free (+tax and trade-in)
Weird, I said "upgrade, i.e. not opening up new lines" AND any phone, any condition trade in. Now tell me if that applied to you.

Mother's Day deals were historically the best upgrade option. The last good one was for my iPhone 12 mini.
