Kinda hard to believe that they're "audiophile" grade at this price...

They are pretty boring for music but the soundstage is incredible. Probably the best gaming headset money can buy if you play competitively.

Why not? Cars used to suck but over time mass production processes improved and you get Toyota that lasts 200k miles easily. Unless your definition of audiophile means $$$$

How do you think they compare to the 598 and 599 if you've ever used them?

I currently own and use 599 and 560S every day. 560S at home and 599 at work. 560S are a little clearer and more detailed with a slightly wider soundstage.

599 are warmer and a little more fun to listen to, mainly because they have a bit more bass. Female vocals are a tiny bit more "veiled" than the 560S.
560S are some of the most ridiculously precise and accurate headphones in this price range. Great for games, content production, etc. But for music enjoyment 599 are a little more relaxed, fun, and warm.

Ultimately the differences are minor, so if you have one, I wouldn't be jumping urgently to get the other. If you have neither, you'll get amazing mileage out of the 560S and they'd be my recommendation. In my opinion, the next meaningful upgrade in Sennheiser's line if you want a similar sound is 660S2, so these are an incredible value.

Disclaimer: All of this is my opinion as a big headphone enjoyer and someone who has listened to many while working at an audio store.

I'm sure you're right, but without the integrated mic what do you do, use a desktop mic?

It's what I do. I have a Yeti that I bought before I knew better. You can buy a decent mic for half the price. Someone did link me to a mic that attaches to the 560Ss and the cable passes through, but I didn't opt for that. The Yeti works fine. The Samson Go was one mic someone recommended before knowing I'd had the Yeti for a few years prior.

Not the same person, but yes commonly nice headphones like these are paired with a desktop mic or a separate boom mic. However Sennheiser now has the HD500 BAM boom mic which can be plugged directly into most of the HD5XX and one or two of the HD6XX series.

I think if I ever upgrade, it would be to at least a 650 or possibly a different brand. But then I'd likely need an expensive amp because most of those have much higher impedance.

Thanks for the detailed opinion. As someone who used to have a fairly high end stereo system (Bryston 4BST amp, Adcom 550 preamp, Infinity Kappa 8, Denon 2560 CD, etc) I know what good sound is, but am also price conscious. I've owned the 598s for many years (paid $100 for the brown/ ivory) and picked up the 599s because they were too cheap to resist-- $80. Most reviewers rated the 599s as better than the 598s. I feel the 598s are more open and more pleasant to listen to overall, with better mids and a bigger soundstage, but lacking the bass that the 599s have. I had already added a tiny portable headphone amp made by Brainwavz, who no longer makes them. I got it for $16 on a slickdeal about 12 years ago. It adds a little volume and a little bass and is incredibly clean. With the amp, the 598s have at least as much bass as the 599s, only tighter. It's a shame they stopped making the Brainwavz amp.

So to me, the 598s with the Brainwavz is the superior sound, but at $80 for the 599 I get to keep a pair near the TV. I bought a small bluetooth receiver that has a headphone jack so I can use them with the TV (which has no headphone jack).
I don't intend to get the 560s but I was curious.

You can get the Sennheiser proprietary headphone cord with a built in mic. Although it might not be good enough quality for you to game with. Something like this, although it doesn't list the 560

LOL, this is true. A modern Toyota Camry or Honda Accord handle as good as sportscars did, back in the day. With their larger optional engines they are faster than some older sportscars too.

The HD6XX were just on sale at Massdrop for $150 a few weeks ago. Somehow, I missed that deal. Do you think they are significantly better? Is is worth waiting for another deal like that on the HD6XX? The concerning thing about the HD6XX is that they need more power to drive them. I've been reading up on headphones and I've come to the conclusion that the HD560S is probably the most sensible solution for a regular person interested in a open back and a neutral sound. The HD599 SE was recently on sale for $100. That seems to be the best deal for something warmer and not quite as well regarded as the HD560S. It seems that the HD550 is now the new, highest regarded, headphone of the Sennheiser 5 series. I'm seriously thinking of getting the 560, but wondering if I should step up to the 6XX.

Others replied with good info as well but wanted to say i use a Mod Mic with mine and its amazing. you need to do a little cable management but ill deal with a few cables if it means i get the best gaming headset.
Ive tried a lot of other gaming headsets (maxwell level) and nothing compares. Once you use open-back headphones you never want to go back. The only reason i could see not using them would be if you game in a really noisy environment.
FWIW the HD560s sells for like 120ish USED on ebay so this is a steal.

This was my first audiophile set of headphones. I was so absolutely blown away by the sounds id never heard before in the music I'd been listening to for 20 years that I almost immediately upgraded to the HD 600.

Then I was impressed again, so I bought the Hifiman Ananda.

Then I was impressed again, so I bought the Hifiman He1000se. End game. Be careful. This hobby might make you poor.

Do you think these headphones are good for all types of music? I listen to a lot of ambient, downtempo, and lounge type music. I don't need exaggerated bass, but I need detailed and quality bass.
