Why does this require vet approval?
It seems like a gimmick.

Thank you! My vet will approve it since my cat is fat.

My vet would demand an office visit first, for which she would charge $175, and only then issue an approval. So would someone please explain why such an approval is required? Is there something dangerous in these ingredients?:
"Chicken, Chicken Meal, Rice, Ground Yellow Corn, Ground Wheat, Corn Protein Meal, Animal Fat Preserved With Mixed-Tocopherols, Dried Beet Pulp, Powdered Cellulose, Dried Yeast, Liver Flavor, Dried Egg Product, Glycerin, Salt, Potassium Chloride, L-Lysine Monohydrochloride, Calcium Carbonate, Phosphoric Acid, Vitamin E Supplement, Mono And Dicalcium Phosphate, Choline Chloride, Zinc Sulfate, L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate (Vitamin C), Thiamine Mononitrate (Vitamin B-1), Ferrous Sulfate, Niacin (Vitamin B-3), Manganese Sulfate, Vitamin A Supplement, Potassium Sorbate (A Preservative), Calcium Pantothenate (Vitamin B-5), Vitamin B-12 Supplement, Copper Sulfate, Riboflavin Supplement (Vitamin B-2), Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B-6), Garlic Oil, Folic Acid (Vitamin B-9), Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex (Vitamin K), Calcium Iodate, Biotin (Vitamin B-7), Vitamin D-3 Supplement, Sodium Selenite. Most likely it's nothing dangerous and rather it's more than likely it makes the animal live longer or some scheme for the rich and ultra powerful thus normal people like us can't be a part of this special club without "prior authorization" keeping us out of the loop. That's the way life works sometimes my friends.

First two contain hydrolyzed protein which are commonly in prescription dog foods to rule out allergy concerns.
Why these require a prescription I'm not really sure, maybe ask your vet about it. You need to get vaccinations anyway at some point if you have a dog, so ask when you get your dog/cat vaccines.

In the Amazon listing I don't see any mention of hydrolyzed protein, but even if the chicken/chicken meal in this feed has undergone hydrolysis, wouldn't you agree that should make it more easily digestible to a dog, any dog, and less likely to cause digestive upsets or allergic reactions?

There could be other ingredients that they normally don't want dogs to eat but temporarily to rule out other issues or whatever reason the food is prescribed. I'm not a vet but that's my guess. If Purina/Royal Canin/Science Diet want to make the most money possible, why would they make it as requiring a prescription at all? Maybe some prescription dog food is lower protein, hydrolyzed protein, maybe one is lower fat, the prescription stuff might not be the best for a healthy dog to eat all the time over a typical dog food.

They've had prescription dog food for over 50 years I think so I'm kind of feeling like there's a reason for it.
