My guess was that it's a way to reach military members/MWR that are remote and might not have an easy way to access the games.

That's incorrect. AFN Now is availabe free to military members. It's a streaming service which includes the winter Olympics. However, if you want to share your info with NBC you can do that too.

If you don't have access to OTA antenna or do not subscribe to a TV package through a provider, you cannot watch it legally online for free without limitations. As a cord cutter, this allows me to gain legal access to the content.

I haven't bothered watching a single minute of the olympics because in the past I could watch at least a good portion of them for free (with advertising of course), now they want me to pay for peacock (with advertising still of course). I don't live within range to use OTA.

I know what AFN is, but they have a schedule of which games they will be streaming. Not full access to all games.
