You can pop the speaker out of the gen 1 tags very easy if you want to use as a tracker in a car, tool bag, briefcase or purse. The gen 2 are harder and take more skill to remove the speaker. FYI, if you have a tracker in a work bag and someone steals it, the scumbags iphone will tell them a tracker is moving with them and they can actually activate the speaker to make noise so they can find the tracker easy to toss it. If you pop out the speaker, they will still be notified that a tracker is moving with them but they cant find the tracker and could just dump the car, bag, bike or whatever. You can track it and fine whatever you had stolen much quicker. I will stick with the gen 1's for now.

The additional features on gen 2 makes it a better choice for a few extra bucks

Meh! These were always going on sale for $65 long before the 2nd gen Airtags were ever mentioned. Now that the 2nd generation Airtags are out, you'd expect these to be cheaper.

If you buy online at Costco you get 5 new ones so it's nearly same price

There's a good YouTube video of taking out speaker in 2nd gen

I don't think $5 if you take speaker out put 2 in your car and track stolen car or you could track luggage or wallet or get key ring and track keys
I have 2 in my car as my car is easy to steal
The quicker you get it back the less damage but if I bought now I would get 2nd gen from Costco 5 for $100

The problem is that even with the speaker taken out, an AirTag will still give itself away with Precision Finding, right? A third party Find My tag is almost better in this case.

With 2nd gen out this price isn't amazing, but it's not awful and without the Costco deal on 2 gen, this would be a lot more attractive considering most places are 99 for a 4 pack of gen 2.

The biggest upgrade in the second generation AirTags is around the precision finding. So if you're tracking small items like keys and wallets in a larger area, the second generation is going to be a big update. Likewise, the speaker of being a little louder will help those small items if they are in a jacket pocket or bag.

What about those cheap 3rd party? Doesn't notify thieves that they're being tracked?
