Optimizing the Galaxy Tab A9+ 5G:
The Tab A9+ is a solid mid-range tablet, but requires a few optimizations to shine.
In Settings:
- Disable Edge panels
- Set Battery protection to Basic
- Disable Daily Board
- Disable RAM Plus
- Reduce animations
You'll also want to disable or uninstall the Metro (or TMO depending) apps.
Unlock status:
The tablet is locked to Metro and T-Mobile by default. This means that you can use it with a Metro SIM or a T-Mobile SIM out-of-the-box.
You cannot use it with any other mobile carrier until it unlocks.
The unlock happens 1 year/365 days after activation.
You should boot the tablet up at least once with the Metro SIM inside and go through setup to both ensure the initial activation happens and to ensure the tablet doesn't factory rest on you in the future.
The "skip SIM setup" workaround is a Samsung test mode that will work initially, but as soon as any SIM card is put into the device it will factory reset and try the initial activation flow. If you go through initial setup at least once with the Metro SIM and then factory reset the device, the tablet will no longer require a SIM for setup AND it will never try to go through the initial activation flow/factory reset on you if/when you do put a SIM inside.
Regardless of the SIM lock status, WiFi always works.
Tablet performance:
It's not a powerhouse, but it works great for web/streaming/email/GDocs/etc. It also makes for a decent retro emulation tablet if you install Retroarch.
Price comparison:
At $30 (or ~$60 for new customers) this is notably cheaper than purchasing the WiFi version which is currently
on sale at Amazon for $140 [amazon.com].
