Re: Costco deal - the AAs are fine but lithium AAAs usually have less capacity than NiMH, the circuitry to get them to work at 1.5V takes up too much room in the AAA form factor.

I think the initial problems with rechargeable batteries and Blink is that the old school rechargeables didn't put out a full 1.5v.
I had Blink for years, and in truth the Lithium Ion batteries did last 2 years as stated so I never felt the need for rechargeables.
Blink also has cheap solar panels so no need to swap out batteries.

Your phone maybe able to charge the AA, but I wouldn't muck around with that port. The step-down/charging circuits on these are delicate and a point of failure.
PD chargers/cables (like the ones that come with modern phones/electronics) likely won't work from my past experience with similar batteries as they're missing the necessary components to negotiate 5V power delivery.

USB-C to USB-C chargers (PD) stay at 0V until the device tells them to turn on. Devices without 5.1k Ohm resistors on their Configuration Channel (CC) pins cannot initiate this, causing the charger to remain off as the charger doesn't even "know" that's its plugged into anything.
This is the case on many cheaper devices with usb c, for example the R36s and many other Retro handhelds that were posted here on SD only charge with USB-A to USB-C cables.
My Blinks with the lithium batteries have all gone at least 2 years. Even the front door where Amazon and solicitors trigger them every other day lasted 2 years.
My 2 cents is to stick with lithium non rechargeable.
With that said, you gotta live YOUR life, and ask yourself if these are worth it FOR YOU. See the comments here, and try to make that determination.
