Are these analogous to the cut-off wheels for dremels/rotary tools? In other words: effective yet short-lived?

Yeah. They are pretty much one time use blades and they don't cut the greatest. But even the expensive blades don't last very long unless you get the really expensive carbide stuff. So it's hard to say which makes more sense to buy. The best middle ground I've found is buying good Milwaukee blades on sale at a good price.

Basically. You can get cheap blades that don't last long (these) or spend a lot more $$ for blades that might last a bit longer. There's also a tool you can buy that "re-tooths" blades but it's just grinder and without hardening the blades will dull quickly anyway.
