in my experience you need two compost bins. one to keep adding things to and one leave alone and let it bake.

If you do enough reading beforehand and get the right mix of materials in the bin, there shouldn't be any bugs or bad smells.

Agree, I have exactly same bin bought from Lidl store and i just avoid meats and dairy and bin never smelled.

The volume of this compost bin is only 0.24 cu meter which is small when you talk about hot composting. In terms of smell, you can never put animal sourced stuff like kitchen waste into this bin to avoid some smell. If you really do, you will find that the nitrogen source is quite limited to keep the hot composting going. In other words, if you only put leaves in there, it won't go ballistic. Maybe fresh grass clippings only for the nitrogen source. The core temperature of this system won't go quite high to the extent of real hot composting. In other words, if you just pile the leaves and grass clippings on the ground into a mound, it will serve for the same purpose of this product. If you have a very small yard or your yard is all floored up with bricks then it might make sense to buy one otherwise it doesn't make sense to purchase this one.
Oh, forgot about the worms/bugs. It will attract worms like earth worms since it does not have a bottom but the worms help the composting process. For other bugs, yes, the flies can fly inside and lay their eggs so composting is not about avoiding bugs, which is what mother nature offers to you. If you are not fine with bugs crawling around in the compost bin, what you can do is to use chemical fertilizers and forget about composting stuff by yourself.

I thought the best compositing systems are ones where you can rotate the contents - don't you have to mix compost at different times during decomposition? This system just seems like you pile everything on top of the last stuff tossed in the bin - and eventually something comes out the bottom.

I had a ground compost bin, it attracted and fed voles. I now have a 2 chamber one that's off the ground.

These or similar should be at Lidl in the next month or so and I want to say it's in the $30 range. I try and get them on clearance for around $10 but that's always a crapshoot.

Depending on how much you compost, you can go with a combination of indoor table-top composter (mostly dehydrators and grinders) and outdoor tumble-style.

Use the indoor one to dump your daily compostable food produce into. Let is dehydrate and chunk everything into small pieces. However they are not really "Decomposter" as there is no bacteria involved in this process.

Once dehydrated, you dump it into a tumble style outdoor decomposter bin. The dehybrated small chunks will not smell or attract a lot of animal/insects, and will also decompost faster than you throwing full size raws. You still need to mix adequate amounts of browns (shredded paper, cardboard, dry leaves etc). Usually you will have excellent dehydrated soil in under 3-4 weeks using this combination method.

Atleast that's my plan based on all the reading I have done so far.

A question for anyone who already owns this or a composter in general. Do you get rodents having this sit in your backyard with all the food scraps?

Last thing we need are more mice around.

I had a ground based open bottom composter of a different style and the fruit rats and mice definitely dug under to get to it. Got rid of it after trying to bury the holes and place stones for a few weeks, without success.
