The volume of this compost bin is only 0.24 cu meter which is small when you talk about hot composting. In terms of smell, you can never put animal sourced stuff like kitchen waste into this bin to avoid some smell. If you really do, you will find that the nitrogen source is quite limited to keep the hot composting going. In other words, if you only put leaves in there, it won't go ballistic. Maybe fresh grass clippings only for the nitrogen source. The core temperature of this system won't go quite high to the extent of real hot composting. In other words, if you just pile the leaves and grass clippings on the ground into a mound, it will serve for the same purpose of this product. If you have a very small yard or your yard is all floored up with bricks then it might make sense to buy one otherwise it doesn't make sense to purchase this one.
Oh, forgot about the worms/bugs. It will attract worms like earth worms since it does not have a bottom but the worms help the composting process. For other bugs, yes, the flies can fly inside and lay their eggs so composting is not about avoiding bugs, which is what mother nature offers to you. If you are not fine with bugs crawling around in the compost bin, what you can do is to use chemical fertilizers and forget about composting stuff by yourself.

in my experience you need two compost bins. one to keep adding things to and one leave alone and let it bake.

A question for anyone who already owns this or a composter in general. Do you get rodents having this sit in your backyard with all the food scraps?

Last thing we need are more mice around.
If you use only leaves and grass, you won't have rodents. However, once you add kitchen scraps, they'll chew through the entrance to get inside. This bin's design is terrible and won't hold much weight. Plus, it attracts a lot of strange insects, and the composting process takes at least 6–12 months.

I don't have rodents but I do have stray cats in the neighborhood so I man not be a good judge.

It does attract insects using veg scraps but I like to bag up leaves in the fall and top the composter off with dry leaves whenever I add scraps and that cuts down on them a lot.

I agree with the statement that you need two to take advantage of composting. One to age, and one to build.

If you put animal based scraps in this pile, the pile becomes a free walmart for rodents. They even moved inside the structure.

I am considering this instead of my current setup. I currently have two plastic tubs with a bunch of holes drilled in them. I have been putting veggie and paper towels into a small countertop container then moving them to the tubs when it gets full. The outside tubs have flies for sure but I put some brown paper bags over the top to help keep them inside. It probably needs more browns though and will eventually need bigger containers as I am generating way more scraps than I expected.

I had a ground compost bin, it attracted and fed voles. I now have a 2 chamber one that's off the ground. https://a.co/d/0h3vkqlA it's a pain to assemble though.
apart from the assembly are you happy with it?

I'm happy with it, it's filling up faster than I expected in the winter with a family of 5. I would still recommend it though.

For anyone considering getting into composting, don't forget to piss on it.

I am not kidding. Not only does it provide free nitrogen, but also marks your territory and keeps rodents away.

Thank me later

We have a scrap bin on the counter then empty it each day into the composter. We keep the composer on the far side of the garage, I have not seen and rodents.

I make all my own worm bins with 2 Costco black and yellow bins, and a 3 inch drain pipe from home Depot that I cut into 5 pieces about 5 inches tall to lift the upper bin out of fluid. I install a PVC valve on the lower bin to allow drainage. I drill lots of little holes in the lid for air flow, and in the bottom of the top bin to allow drainage into the lower bin. This system has suited me well for over 10 years.

You can also find free scrap carpet and cut it to size too lay over the top upside down. If you have composting worms they like it.

I have this same one as well. Other poster is correct that assembly is annoying. My other complaint is that it's not the easiest to get compost out of. When you open the door to one compartment, it sticks out between the legs, so you can't really rotate the bin back and forth to loosen up the contents. Usually I have to open the lid, close it, do a rotation, and repeat 4-5 times. Fancier dual-compartment rotating composters have designs where the lid doesn't interfere with the legs.
