This year I bought H&R for the first time. Have always used Turbotax before. Didn't want to upgrade to Win 11.

Importing tax docs from online brokerages did not work. The software itself is very clumsy and feels outdated, Turbotax is much more user friendly.

Even though I managed to file with H&R, I am going back to Turbotax next year.

Strictly my personal opinion, others might have different experience.

A this as good as turbo tax? Thanks
Much better than Turbo Tax. Intuit / Turbo Tax lobbied the government to remove the free filing options, and Turbo Tax tried digital DRM in the past restricting installs without server registration, a terrible practice that prevents reinstalls later if you have to do an amended return. HR Block Taxcut has worked very well for my family with complex tax situations, including multi-state scenarios.

Freetaxusa is equivalently good, and doesn't require installation, and cheaper. Not sure how this and Turbotax are still in business.
Garbage comments like this are not surprising.

I don't want my data in the cloud. If the product is free, you are the product.

HR Block downloadable tax software is much more robust, and allows changes for amended tax return filing a few years after the fact, which is very handy to have as we have had to file amended returns in the past due to corrected 1099's or other situations.

HR Block tax software is far better than the free cloud product you're giving your most private & sensitive information to, to be sold to scammers and predatory companies.

Don't give your money to these companies who lobby to keep our taxes complicated. I use freetaxusa, just as convenient and MUCH cheaper

After the problems I mentioned in another thread here, I decided after 12 years of using this software to try TurboTax. The number one reason is I really needed to import my information from Merrill Lynch and you couldn't do it with this software (supposedly you can do it online that I wasn't able to do it there either). Using TurboTax I imported everything and got my taxes done and under an hour. Happy to pay double for it to actually work and be able to import necessary documents. H&r Block lost a long time customer this year. And their support is atrocious.

I agree for personal returns. For business small business etc, I think you still need business versions of these.

I think the price might go down if I wait, but I'd rather just pull the trigger on this. Lowest I ever paid for H&R Block Deluxe (and that was without state) was $17 so $19 for the Deluxe w/State version seems OK. And I am planning to go to Home Depot to buy some stuff so the $10 gift card will be quite useful. Thanks OP!

While I can certainly appreciate wanting to avoid cloud-based software, FreeTaxUSA has a clear business model where they make money off state returns, upgraded support, amendments, and various other add-ons. It's not a situation where you are the product and they do NOT sell your information, which requires consent per IRS rules.

If you have complicated tax situation (multiple states, spouse works in different state, etc) HR block in some situation has better options. I switched to HR block from turbotax few years back because of this.
Can you please elaborate. I am in this situation. Had to buy turbotax state twice

With HR block deluxe, you can file jointly if you and your spouse lived in different states. With turbo tax, it tells you to file separately (not sure if it changed in past couple of years though). You still have to pay for each state (with hr block deluxe, one state is included).
If you and your spouse lived in same state (for more than 6 months at least), then you can go with either of them, and just add another state.
Not sure if this was helpful. I am no tax expert. Just mentioned this as I had faced this situation and moved from turbo tax to hr block. It was not about saving money, but being able to get the software to work for my situation.
