Derp. Absolutely not true, RAM only matters if you're processing on the CPU not the GPU. If its the CPU then you need a monster CPU in addition to lots of RAM. A 9850X3D is a bad choice for running AI models.

If you click through, at least as of right now, if you bought the RAM alone it comes with WB Black SN7100 4TB SSD as a freebie. So the RAM + SSD is $1700, not $1700+$500. Also there is no need to get this specific RAM, mobo, or CPU as you can get slightly different ones for less that are comparably performant. Like the 9800X3D CPU is like ~98% as good, for less money. It's still a good deal but these numbers are inflated.

Community Reviews

This bundle stands out as a high-value parts package for AI or workstation-style builds, especially because the 128GB of G.SKILL RAM and the included 4TB WD_BLACK SSD carry most of the value. The RAM is described as having decent timings, and the free extras make the total pricing look far below buying the parts separately. The main oddity is the pairing of a gaming-focused 9850X3D with 128GB of memory and no GPU, which feels overbuilt for gaming and underbalanced for the CPU. It makes the most sense if the RAM and storage are the real draw.

I'm currently transforming a model to run on an AMD 370, and even though it's using a 4070 to process everything, it is also filling up my 128gb of ram.

You're severely lacking VRAM. If somehow you could add 100gb of VRAM to a 4070, you'd see a massive boost in performance. Just because you can use system RAM as a reserve pool doesn't mean it's recommended or suggested. It kills performance.

For many AI applications like fine tuning LoRAs or inference, CPU is not the bottleneck. System ram can also be very useful for inference in MoE models, which are huge models that only use a subset of their parameters at any one time. Most used layers are kept on GPU, the rest are offloaded to CPU RAM. Even with a 96gb GPU, I can't run qwen3.5 without 256 system ram. It's useful.

RAM prices are in a bubble right now thanks in part to someone's trade war. Trying to make a profit from resale would be like trying to flip houses when the market is peaking... it's not impossible, but you're just as likely to be left holding the bag when the bubble finally bursts and prices settle down
Thanks is small part, this is because of AI, not tarrifs. I don't see that bursting anytime soon as memory and ssd capacity is pretty much sold out for years.

If you start a business and have a decent income, you can write these off on your taxes. Just use them to generate a bit of income on like vast.ai or mining or something.

Wow this is pretty sick. I think I might buy this and sell the ram for $1200, SSD for $450, and motherboard for $175 on ebay.

I could keep the CPU and $125 on top, but realistically eBay fees would be about $250, but still this CPU for $125 is crazy.

It is kind of an annoying amount of work to sell all this on eBay though

This combo is a bit bizarre. For anything you would need 128GB of RAM for, this is not the processor you would want.
When does any combo from Newegg ever make sense?
