Install syncthing-fork on both of your phones, and leave your pixel plugged in at home. Setup syncthing to sync your camera folder from your real phone. Any time you take a photo or video it'll immediately transfer directly to your pixel and backup to Google photos from there. It's like having the unlimited original quality Google photos storage deal on any phone.

You can even download all the photos and videos you have in your Google photos account currently (Google takeout makes this easy), delete them from Google photos, copy them to your pixel 1 camera folder, and they'll upload back into your Google Photos account, but take up no space.

And if anyone wants in on this, just buy a used pixel 1. All photos and videos that upload to Google Photos from a pixel 1 take up no storage space on your account, regardless of what device you used to capture them. It's free lifetime unlimited original quality photo and video cloud storage.

At some point in the future the OS on the original pixel will become too old to run the latest Google photos app, and this loophole will end, but anything you upload until that time is free to store forever.

Did the costco route:

Max 4 lines allowed
No activation fee, $100 shop card per line
Have credit card ready to pay tax for the full price of the phones
Have your old phone IMEI ready - need to be T-Mobile network compatible. I used the decades old 2G phones
Have computer ready to DocuSign the order email
It took me one hour to complete, no hiccups

I am confused. In T-Life, I see 'Google Pixel 10: On Us with any condition trade. For a limited time, trade in an eligible device in any condition and save up to $800 on a new Google PIxel 10.' However, in the small print, there is an asterisk that only says 'Get up to $500 off with trade on most plans. Existing Go5G members also qualify.' and there is a list of 'eligible' phones for $250 off and another set for $500 off. I don't see the Pixel 9a offer. But if I shop for PIxel 9a, there is a tab with 2 promotions, and one is 'Get one On Us with trade on most plans'. But again, you have to trade specific eligible phones, and they have a list for $250 credit and a list for $500 credit.

Does this mean I am not eligible for the PIxel 9a $400 promo?

Oh, and I tried to check if my plan qualifies (I am on the old One plan). But the link just took me to the page that lists what my plan covers. It didn't say anything specifically about this $400 Pixel 9a promo.

Does the Pixel have to remain active on the number that you upgrade on? I have an old moto g that'd I'd like to trade in but I'm not sure if I want to give up my S24+ as my daily driver.
I don't think so. Once you activate the line on the Pixel, you can transfer the line back to your old phone, but the pixel will remain on payment plan for 24 months. What are you going to do with the locked phone though? Anyone please correct me if my understanding is wrong.

Because of all this conflicting small print, I am not sure I trust this promo. You can certainly buy a new Pixel 9a, and trade-in any phone --- but you won't know if it's truly accepted for free credits until a month or 2 later, right? Like if they deem the phone not 'eligible', or your plan is not eligible, etc --- they just won't give you the credits. This happened to me once before (where the Tmobile store said it was all fine, but T-mobile denied after I sent in the phone), so I am really leery. Specifically the eligible plans listed go back only as old as Go5G --- ie no Magenta & no One plans ever mentioned. I *DEFINITELY* do not want them to 'upgrade' my plan to one that is eligible for this promo per their small print.

I just did a different upgrade through the Costco T-Mobile sales line ($800 off any trade for a Pixle-10). If you are a Costco member the $35 activation fee is waived AND you will get a $100 Costco card in a few weeks just for going through the Costco route.

I believe your thinking is correct. In the past, people have been able to pay off the phone upfront and get it unlocked (and you would still continue getting the monthly credits on your phone# for 2 yrs -- but you must remain with T-mobile with that tele#) -- but I think they somehow closed that loophole. What you could do is use that phone on the T-mobile network with any other T-mobile #. So basically, if you are going to use or sell the phone, it is locked to T-mobile only.

You are right to be cautious. In the past, there have been reports of people losing their old plan and getting upgraded to one of T-Mobile's more expensive plans. It's not worth the risk to save a few bucks in the short term if you are a longtime user of T-Mobile.

If T-Mobile doesn't list your plan, it's best to assume this deal doesn't apply.

You won't get upgraded with the current pixel 10 on us promo. I did it just fine with my one plan.

You sure this is going to work with Simple Choice? I don't see Simple Choice as one of the eligible plan types. (I ask because I'm also on an old Simple Choice plan.)

I'd be afraid of T-Mobile checking somewhere later on in the process & realizing that you aren't actually eligible. I hope I'm wrong!
I usually just call 611 and ask them if the promo is available for my plan. You can just give them the promo code, this one is R350

I just got done chatting with them and they said I was eligible with Simple Choice even though it wasn't listed.
