Calathea can be difficult. I have never had luck with them. They like high humidity (60-70%), no drafts and do not like tap water. I am not to the point that I am going to buy distilled water just for my plants.

Distilled water is great for coffee makers and ice makers to extend their lifespans. Hard water kills them quick.

not that its "for pets" I think they meant to say "safe for pets" as many plants are toxic to pets. eg cats:
