You're correct that "synthetic" is a marketing term referring to the base stocks in the lubricant formulation meeting the minimum percentage as defined by a landmark court case referenced here: https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums...wn.301956/

However, Mobil 1 hasn't been full synthetic (100% Grp IV or Grp V) in probably a decade. Further, depending on the formulation and where it was blended, the percentage of PAO ("true synthetic", Grp IV; I don't believe M1 has had Grp V for a long time) present in the base stock blend can vary quite a bit, or be nonexistent altogether. What's important is that you pick the right viscosity multi-grade for your car/application that meets the minimum specifications dictated by the manufacturer (API category and/or ILSAC and/or specific OEM internal tests, such as Mercedes or VW tests).

Nothing, but many like the name brand appeal.

Im a mechanic and have some that HAVE to have brand X. So I charge more if I do not have it in my stash.

As long s the oil level is proper and you change on time the brand will not matter if it meets specs.

Just so people are aware, the term "synthetic" is marketing jargon now and not a reflection of whether the oil is synthetic or not. Mobil 1 is made from a truly synthetic base, whereas many other "synthetic" oils including Mobil regular, Costco Kirkland synthetic are made from refined oils.
What about Walmart Supertech synthetic?

Yes I agree. From what I understand, just a few major oil producers make oil for many brands. Many tests have orven Super tech is a decent oil. https://www.enginelabs.com/engine...ance-test/

Just a hint, you can order two for the free shipping and always return one to your store in a pinch for the credit.

Yes online pricing for oil is much less than the store price, and WMT doesn't price match its website either.

I've had Walmart price match their website for me many times without any issues

Good to know for rebate purposes, as many oil rebates are only valid on B&M Walmart receipts, No rebate on this oil presently, but there is one on another that may work well for some. I forget the brand, sorry, it's in HD.

Kind of unfair to compare synthetic to conventional, but SuperTech is still a fine oil

GM has it's own specs (Dexos), which go beyond the US CAFE bar.

I don't see how the remainder of what you said, while mostly true, is pertinent to the previous comments (mine, and the user I was replying to re: synthetic oils). Particle suspension is largely controlled by additives, mixing throughout the oil circuit, and hopeful removal by the filter. Further, color isn't the most perfect indicator of oil degradation. Like food dye, it doesn't take much fine particles to change the color yet the performance is nearly the same (as in, not hindered from fresh). Finally, there's always residual oil in the sump after a drain/change (hang-up). When the fresh oil circulates, you'll see the color change almost instantly from driving it around.
GM specs = marketing BS to squeeze more money from oil companies. Oil filters can only remove large particulates. API rated oils have to meet minimum detergent/cleaning capability. Drive the same car 1000 miles at highway speed and do the same with stop and go traffic if you want more proof about oil coloration.

If you see instant change in oil coloration after an oil change, then there is too much old oil left in the car or the engine is loaded with deposits. I have 207K on my Corolla. OIl color is "like new" after 300 miles of use, using modern synthetic or API SE oil from the 90s. At 5000 miles, the oil color is light to medium amber.

So... This (or Kirkland Full Synthetic) 5W-30 is fine if I change oil every 3000 miles?
3K for stop/go or under 5 mile trips (severe duty condition). 5K-7K highway miles (normal use).
