FWIW - I flashed SteamOS on mine, and would definitely recommend this upgrade.
You're paying $200 for a paperweight if Sony decides they want to force people to the PS portal 2 (I hope doesn't happen) or you have no internet
All that R&D could have been put into an actual portable gaming console like the steam deck but for ps5

Any console can be turned into a "paperweight" if the parent company decides to shut down the support and lock down the device. Nintendo is inching closer and closer to that every day with their 100% digital ownership (including their silly tokens which are still required even for physical games). That being said, the Portal is much more locked down compared to something like the Logitech G CLOUD which is also a cloud based device BUT isn't marketed towards a single platform, thus isn't tied to a single platform either. However Xbox, Sony, etc could shut off access to their remote play to 3rd party devices in a 1/1000th of a second. Including other cloud based devices or phones / tablets.
Why is the R&D "wasted?" Their goal was (clearly) to sell Sony branded hardware which works natively with the PS platform, they've archived that. Their R&D wasn't devoted to giving you the warm and fuzzies.
Cloud based gaming inherently requires internet....that is how it works. Sorry we live in reality? It's a $170 device (currently) it would be absurd to expect it to match the standalone abilities of something like the ROG Ally or Steam Deck which cost 3-5 times as much.
You can easily remote play PS4/5 via your smart phone, Steam Deck, G CLOUD, etc. If that is the route you want to go...do it. No one is preventing you. Super easy to do. Other people might want a device that natively plugs into a certain software ecosystem, is purpose built, isn't cobbled together, does not hijack their phone / tablet when it use. Not sure why both options existing angers you so much.
