Tell me why this is a better deal than the Moto G Stylus for $55.

The Motorola phones I used before were the Stylus 2023, 2024, and Edge 2024.
These phones had similar chip performance, with the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 and 7s Gen 2 processors, and the A36's Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 processor.
While Motorola phones often lacked performance compared to more expensive phones,
at least there was no lag when moving the home screen left or right.
The A36 experienced lag even when simply moving the home screen left or right.
The A36 is fine as a backup phone, but it's not ideal for everyday use.

I was just weighing this yesterday. The moto is a better overall phone (and you can check the specs/reviews to see all the points), but this A36 has much better longevity because it gets android updates and security updates *much* longer than motos. That is extra important if you're someone who buys metro phones to sit in a drawer for a year waiting to unlock before you use them -- by the time you put the moto into use, you've generally got a year to 1.5 yrs before it's unsupported.

It's just a matter of what's more important to you or what you want this phone for. If you want a phone you can unlock and have as a spare phone, the A36 will do that nicely for a lot longer. Or you want it as a main phone you won't need to replace after a year or so of actual use. If you just want the better phone that you either don't care about having a much shorter use period, or you don't mind using it long past when security updates end, I'd grab the Moto.

This is always the main issue with Motos in general, btw. You'll see a great price on phones that look great, and in use, they are great! But there's a reason they're cheaper, and it's those short support periods. We've had several, I just set my husband up with an Edge bought in late 2024, set aside, and unlocked in Dec. Very nice little phone. We'll want to replace it sometime next year due to support ending in May 2027, otherwise, he'd gladly keep it for years.

Ageed. I'm thinking of getting it as a very solid backup phone, as it gets support through at least 2031, possibly 2032. I would prefer for it to get a little lower, as in, free with a month's plan without needing to fool with a port-in to get it at that rate. I do have a gv number I could port, though, I just love the ease of no port.

I like this option better. Does the deal also apply? Pay $99 and $60 for first month then let it sit for a year to unlock?

Moto G Stylus only has 4GB of RAM which will be sluggish to use. The A36 has 6GB of RAM. With every app and every Android update the phone becomes hungry for ever more RAM. Also Samsung is usually better about releasing future updates for the device for a longer period of time compared to Motorola.
