I've had one since 2022. If your alternative is a regular resistance electric heater, there's no downside to getting this. Best case it uses 1/4 of the electricity as a heat pump. Worst case, it uses resistive heating and is the exact same as a regular electric water heater.
They are louder, as it requires a fan to move the air and transfer heat. It cools and dehumidifies the surrounding area, but I use it in a northern climate and it's great (super beneficial in humid summer, but not too bad during dry winter). It's about 3-5 degrees colder in the 15x8 utility room if the door is shut. Maybe 1-2 degrees colder if the door is left open.
Setup requires a condensate drain line, but otherwise it uses the same hookups (30A 240V) as a regular electric water heater so it's super easy to install

Installed this model DIY in May 2022 and it has been great on energy savings versus regular electric heater.
I have had to replace the thermistors 2x at this point though and all savings would have been lost if I was not able to do this work myself. All parts are free from Rheem for 10 years and their troubleshooting support is great so if you have a digital multimeter and are willing to watch some youtube videos this unit should be a good choice.
You can also just opt to not use the heat pump if anything goes wrong with that part of the heater.

I know they're not silent, and it will make the room colder as well. This could be an issue in the winter for any shared/nearby spaces.

Review of an older model and mentions some noise: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybED3-Tz8Nk
His recent update: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UO7T9vhOp8Y
This effect is largely overstated

Service??? You only need to flush it once a yr. What else are they doing to it? You are being ripped off.
Im thinking they are saying they pay for the gas service and then the gas usage on top of that.
Every utility has a service cost.

I installed one in my SW Florida home in August of past year. Can't hear it outside garage, energy saving mode only. I do track the electricity usage and the cost is way down during hot months vs January and February. Cost is about $6 a month during hotter months and goes up to $10 during colder. That's for two people. No problems, so far.

Anyone have one of these for more than a year? Curious of experience, but also hesitant about reliability.
Since early 2020 - no issues aside from a clogged condensate line like I also get with A/C system (zooglea) I have the 80 gal version and it is in my garage in Florida

I bought one of these in 2022. It's cheaper to operate than my natural gas heater was, though recovery is slower. CHECK WITH YOUR LOCAL ELECTRIC COMPANY. I BOUGHT MINE FOR $1350 and got a $1250 rebate from the electric company.

Your math isn't mathing. What does this run on, hopes and dreams? Have to factor in the electricity costs. Is electricity cheap where you are? If it isn't, this may not ever pay for itself. 🤷
They're staying that the $444 they're paying doesn't include the amount of gas they also use per year, so as long as their electricity cost is less than $444 + gas, they're saving money. These do tend to use much less electricity than regular water heaters. Ours costs about $18-20 a month to run in electricity cost. It's saved us a ton over our old electric water heater and it makes the garage slightly less brutal in the summer.

Don't have this particular model but have a GE heat pump water heater that is 12 years old, no issues other than if the power flickers it some times fails to turn back on. We have ours set to heat pump only mode and it basically sounds like a window ac unit. It's in garage so usually not too annoying, but if for some reason it's too loud we can flip it to standard mode temporarily for silent operation.

Don't need a Heat Pump Water Heater (HPWH) at this time, but this is the lowest street price I have seen for one. My utility stopped doing rebates in the last few years, but even when they had rebates something like this HPWH was selling for 2-3x as much. At this price, the cost is even less than when my utility has rebates.

I sent the link off to a friend. His utility offers a bit over $1k back on HPWH, so hopefully he jumped on this.

There were about a 1000 units in stock this morning when the email went out, looks like less than 500 now. If you are on the fence, I'd jump on it by the end of the day today (2-28-2026).

I wonder if the weird model number is going to interfere with being able to get rebates...

Edit: I think Menards has the model number listed wrong (missing a 50 in there) . I think this is the real model number which is listed on the AHRI website (which is used for rebate certification): PROUH50 T2 RH350BM

I've had one for four years now. It sounds just like a refrigerator running. It is in my garage. If your water heater is indoors and the air conditioning by product is a concern it can be vented or ducted outdoors. It cools my Florida garage. It uses 60kwh a month. Has been nothing short of great and costs so much less per month than a traditional water heater.

Recently got LG one installed and it's working amazing in the New England winter. Super silent. Was considering Rheem earlier as much cheaper than LG but noise and ton of bad reviews on Home Depot made me go with LG. LG is the only one that comes with dual inverter compressor which is not only super efficient but super silent. Many contractors and customers praise LG HPWHs
