Coupon link:

If you bought any of the Bumble Bee flavored tunas in the pouches recently, it's the same coupon. Also since it's a S&S coupon, it might be a Prime exclusive coupon.

It breaks my heart because I grew up with Bumblebee, but once I tried canned tuna *without* HVP (Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein) I never went back.

Long story short, many packers add HVP to the tuna. Not only is it a flavor enhancer (which lets them hide lower quality fish) it also causes the meat to absorb and maintain a higher water content (and therefore drained weight) without actually giving more fish.

Aka another avenue for shrinkflation.

EDIT: You'll see it listed often as vegetable broth (MSG is a salt so sometimes when they note salt it can be that.)

This is/was such a big issue, the packers petitioned FDA to explicitly formalize it and let them use "drained weight" as the measure instead of "processed cake weight". Currently it's vague IIRC. Link: https://www.fda.gov/food/hfp-cons...-standards

And FDA started a regulatory action to do that in 2023 (Link: https://www.federalregister.gov/d...-container ) on it. it goes against the pro-Real Food/anti-ultraprocessed food sentiment in today's HHS/FDA/USDA so I don't expect it to get finalized, but I haven't seen anything on it in a while.

EDIT AGAIN: Adding more as I remember it. Starkist got their packing permit amended to "market test" the change and "measure consumer acceptance" in March of 2021 while they were starting to argue for formalizing the change industry wide... So maybe hide yo kids, hide yo wife from them. I think that was just for a couple of production lines, so maybe not everything?

Link: https://www.federalregister.gov/d...ing-permit

EVEN MORE EDITS: Here's the current regulation. See Sec (a)(6) for how they're authorized to include HVP and MSG.

I think I'm done for now. Have a good night all.

Thanks for the informational post. Do you have links to tuna without HVP?

I get it from a supermarket chain in the northeast/mid-Atlantic U.S. (originally from NY but expanding southward), Wegmans. Many of their house brand products are Canadian, IIRC. I imagine there's a Canadian packer that doesn't use it that would show up elsewhere.

EDIT: Just read the site, they say this one's from Thailand. Not sure if that's a new thing because I don't remember it saying that previously, but FYI.

Yes. Amazon has been using the same 20 and 25 percent coupons since at least the beginning of 2026.
And people here try to claim Amazon is better than Walmart Cash, which you can use many many many times.
