Does anyone know if you can put your own PDF files on this? I've never owned a Kindle so I'm not sure if books can be loaded on there from a PC.

It's pretty walled garden with kindle. It's not drag and drop. It has to be sent to the kindle app and Amazon cloud which will convert it to a readable ebook similar version. There will be errors in formatting but it gets the job done. A truly drag and drop is possible if you jailbreak it, which there are plenty of tutorials but are locked off if it is updated to the most current version accidentally

I just bought a regular "Like New" one during the President's Day sale. Somehow they ended up cancelling my order so they honored the sale price for a brand new one. Still was about twenty dollars more than this. I'm tempted to get one anyway.

I bought a refurbished Paperwhite from Cowboom (remember that?) and it still works fine.

It is drag and drop and don't need to jailbreak.

Yes, you can put your own PDFs on it. But this is a 6.8" screen. The PDF will not display as intended. You might get better results first converting to epub with Calibre.

Is there a better e-reader option for someone that mainly reads peer-reviewed journal articles?

I would suggest looking at a kindle scribe if you want to stay in the kindle ecosystem. Other options include some of the other e-ink tables, remarkable, boox, etc.

You absolutely can - Calibre is your best friend here.

Had this model from 2023 to 2025 and it had a ton of issues, it'd constantly freeze.

I have the newer 2025 model now and it's a lot snappier though for some reason it struggles with chapters sometimes (accessing the chapter list or entering a new chapter).
