About this Item:
  • More power generation: Single-axis tracking mounts maximize efficiency by keeping your solar panels facing the sun at all times. Single-axis tracking mounts can boost the power generation of solar panels by at least 30% compared to traditional fixed solar mounts.
  • 270° adjustment: The single-axis tracking mounting system allows light sensors and controllers to work together to push the rods through 270° of angular adjustment so that the solar panels always follow the sun's rotation, absorbing solar energy from the north-southeast and north-west, thus generating more power.
  • For different panels: The single-axis tracking racking system is also suitable for different sizes of solar panels. Up to 4 panels can be installed when width of each is less than 22in. Up to 3 panels can be installed when width of each is less than 29.5in. Up to 2 panels can be installed when width of each is less than 44.8in. You can install the board according to the actual needs.
  • Stability & installation: Stability of single-axis tracking mounts still deserves your attention. Wind resistance level >L8 and pressure resistance >5400PA are sufficient for most environmental conditions. In addition, the installation is very easy and requires only 4 simple steps: â‘  Use expansion screws to fix the base â‘¡ Connect the A-E rods and actuators to the main pole â‘¢ Installing the Controller â‘£ Installation of solar panels.
  • Easy to use: The setup is very easy, you only need to operate the controller to complete the control of the single axis tracking bracket system. SET Button - Automatically track the solar mode. FLAT(M) Button - Automatic flat bracket mode.

I'd unhook it and bring the panels inside during a Hurricane.

I just ordered eight of these. Even if the motors break right away, they're cheaper then six premade ground mounts. I pulled my solar off the roof to get a new roof, and I'm not going to drill another 800 holes in that new roof. Also, I'll put these in the field for much, much better afternoon solar throughout the year. I am jazzed. And heck, if 8 work, I'll get 8 more and finish out the old microinverter system. The bad news is, I have to dig maybe 250 feet of trench. :\

I used a 70 off coupon for orders over 700 dollars. And 15% back from ten raccoons.

Yes, but you'll have to calculate where the sun will be 8m and 20sec later since the relative position will change by then. You cannot just aim where the sun is now if you want to start laser-targeting it.
Three body problem.

In what universe is this better than just buying an extra solar panel?

Has anyone installed and used this in a hurricane prone area?
No, but it didn't survive a recent asteroid strike nearby. Poor quality

Just a bit of warning. I bought the dual-axis version (also Eco-Worthy) from AliExpress, and received a different version from the product detail page. After going back and forth, I took partial refund to keep it, even though the version I received is not usable for my case. Either partial refund or fight with them to get pre-paid return label.

Take screenshot of what you order from AliExpress, just in case.

I would rather keep my panels above ground (but not on my roof). It also saves me space from my backyard for other things.

And I get full solar input from my panels starting around 11am to 4pm. I can't tell if adding an extra panel would give me the same effeciency for the same price.

there's no way the little motors are going to take even a strong wind, much less a hurricane.
Does it have (or could you modify it) to add some sort of locking mechanism and unplug/disable the motor during strong winds?

Another panel will get you way more solar output than this $140 device. Also, this will almost inevitably have issues and break after a few years, and a solar panel likely will not.

I use one of these to hold a Fresnel lens to use as a solar oven.

True story - I had one panel broken during the Texas freeze, but the tracker is still working strong. It's a steel pole with couple uni struts. The tracker itself may break, but it's just like any other electronic devices.

Not saying who is right or wrong, just to show different situations for different use cases.

Not sure about this single-axis one, but for my dual-axis tracker, it has a wind sensor that is used to detect high wind and put the panels back paralleling to the ground. Whether it works depends on where the sensor is placed.

I installed my own solar panels on my roof. 27 of them. I also built a solar tracker with 4 panels. Used heavy duty aluminum and good actuators. The actuators will break eventually due to the elements and high winds and it's not even hurricane winds. In the end, the extra 10% production isn't worth the cost or headache installing and maintaining. You can buy a wind meter piece on eBay that levels it flat for high winds. I never bothered cause we don't have hurricane winds. I ended up removing all the actuators and mounting it solid.
Also, you can't get this permitted. Even though it's not a permanent structure since you can remove the top of it (at mine could), you're still not permitted to use it to generate solar. I just waited until the inspector left and installed it. But it shows on Google earth and other arial imagery. I've had it for 11 years without permit problems. But within a year I had given up on the tracking feature and just hooked it up solid. I was getting maybe 10% more generation but it's not worth it. You're better off turning it into a manual tracking and just adjusting the north south angle over the seasons as the sun goes lower in the horizon.

What panel? Surely not a tier one panel....?

Ah no, it's Eco-worthy 200W panel. Not a top tier panel, but also cost me more than the price of this tracker.

Eco-Worthy panels are crap, but they are the only ones I can find that fit. I got the two-axis tracker that came with 6 panels. You can actually see little chunks of the cells that broke off in the laminate. They didn't respond to emails about it. I get maybe 160W out of 200W panels.
