Hard Maple or Sugar Maple is 1450 on the Janka Scale, Bamboo is only 1380.

Anything is possible on the internet.

Any $20 cutting board is not going to be made from any exotic or crazy hard bamboo. They are going to use the cheapest, softest stuff to maximize the life of the tooling.

I got a set, they smell terrible (bad lacquer smell), washed them several times but can't get the smell out.

For everyone buying this "wood" to avoid plastic...are you not concerned with whatever adhesive and sealant and stain etc these no name promoted brands use?

We have SDers reporting of a horrible smell that doesn't wash off. ...that's not normal.

The biggest issue here are the intra nodal and diaphragm parts of bamboo are substantially harder. And most bamboo items are made with the outer layers laid parallel to the boards surface.

Cheap bamboo products have the cheapest part of the stalk, which is far harder than between the diagrams

Bamboo cutting boards kill your knives. If you own a knife that holds some value, never use bamboo cutting board

Maple is 1450 on the Janka hardness scale.
Bamboo is only 1380.
Your everyday Maple cutting board is going to "kill" your knives long before Bamboo.

Teak is the best material for cutting boards - naturally high in oil, so it doesn't crack, self healing, and gentle on high end knives.

The question is not how hard these are and if they will dull your knives. The question is will they split at the seams after a few months. Both of my larger cutting boards have done just that. One significantly the other one is just starting after almost a year.
