These look almost identical to the commercial routers they were clearing out last year or the year before that were selling for $11 or thereabouts. I was using one for quite some time, and it's a very nice router -- nothing fancy but great coverage and reliable. I only stopped using mine because I switched to T-Mobile 5G but am probably dumping that and returning to FIOS. I forgot that I should be able to connect the two routers I have (only used one previously).

Those were the Ln1301 routers. Comparable to the mx4200 but have more ram. I have 3. They are tri-band where this in only dual-band. This does have a higher ultimate speed, so splitting the 5ghz to mesh would likely be a very similar experience. This is a solid price if you want to setup a solid mesh for cheap.

Woot also has "Linksys AX5300 Atlas PRO Wi-Fi 6 System" 3 nodes for $30. Is that tri-band? Comparing to this MX5503, which one is better?

They're overall good product but I made to sure to wire them up with ethernet (backhaul) to make them better.

Dual-Band.
Yes. You typically want a tri-band to wirelessly back haul the mesh but these can do 4800mbps 4x4. So splitting that in half would still be 2400mbps, or similar performance to the tri-band models.

Reviews are very hit and miss. Might not be worth the headache.

The Atlas Pro 6 Dual-Band Wi-Fi 6 Mesh system uses the latest Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) standard to deliver true gigabit mesh Wi-Fi speeds throughout your entire home, up to 5.4 Gbps with 6-stream connectivity.

Is Wi-Fi calling still an issue with mesh systems? I remember that being a big thing a few years ago. My house is in a cell dead zone so it's essential for me to have it.

Not modem, just router.

I've got an older Velop system at home working well, picked this up as they appear compatible and I'd like to add a few more nodes.
