Those were the Ln1301 routers. Comparable to the mx4200 but have more ram. I have 3. They are tri-band where this in only dual-band. This does have a higher ultimate speed, so splitting the 5ghz to mesh would likely be a very similar experience. This is a solid price if you want to setup a solid mesh for cheap.

Pulled from an old Woot post on the these routers:

AX5300 is a speed rating based on Wi-Fi 6 standard; if two different devices follow the same standard and have the same antenna setup (to oversimplify), then the AX number is exactly the same, even if devices have different ports and different chipset/CPU/RAM/ROM/GigE/USB/software/drivers, even if such changes mean that real-life performance would be different;
MX5300 device has 4-core CPU, 1024MB RAM, 5x GigE, 1x USB3;
MX5500 device has 2-core CPU; 512MB RAM, 4x GigE, 0x USB;
MX4300 (LN1301) had 4-core CPU; 2048MB RAM; 4x GigE, 1x USB3;
MX55EC3 is presumed to be a BestBuy SKU for 3x MX5500;
MX55EC3-RM2 is Linksys Certified Refurbished;

Yes. You typically want a tri-band to wirelessly back haul the mesh but these can do 4800mbps 4x4. So splitting that in half would still be 2400mbps, or similar performance to the tri-band models.

I have a Google Nest WiFi and it's the biggest piece of sh*t I've ever owned. The software alone is so bad on that thing, it becomes crippled the minute internet is out. I swapped it out for an MX4300 with OpenWRT. Runs rock solid. I don't know about these though. They're also refurb so that puts me off.
I ended up putting an order in so we will see how it goes. Shipping estimate is mid march tho!

Keep in mind that these no longer get updates and the last firmware update dates back to 2021

Here is my thought about this MX5500 and the other "AX"5300 if they are basically the same just that MX has USB then.
The MX5500 spec listed is obvious but AX5300 is rather vague. I would get MX5500 if USB port is important to you and get AX5300 if you are willing to gamble.
For me USB isn't that important, I am willing to gamble, if it turn out to be MX5300 then great, and if it is MX5500 w/o USB then it doesn't hurt me either. I will end up flashing them w/ OpenWRT anyway.

Edited: scratched the above. I must have confuse with MX5300. They appear to be the same type, both w/o USB after woot update the spec on the other unit. It appear the other unit was BB exclusive.

Then this post MX5503 is essentially same as that AX5300, which is $5 lower?
Woot! just updated the model #s and yeah they are both the same. The one listed for $29.99 is the MX55EC3 which was a Best Buy exclusive for the first 6 months of its release which then was changed to this MX5503 bundle.

My mistake then. So they are the same, the cheaper one is just BestBuy exclusive. Do we know if they are any difference, spec-wise?

AX5300 is the speed and is somewhat ambiguous, MX5300 and MX5500 are the actual models. MX5300 is officially 1147Gbps (2.4GHz band) + 2402+1733 (5GHz dual band) ~= 5300Gbps. MX5500 is 600 (2.4GHz) + 4804 (5GHz single band) ~= 5400. The MX5500 uses "Qualcomm Immersive Home 214" (later renamed to Dragonwing N6) IPQ5018 dual 1.0GHz and there is a OpenWRT development thread [openwrt.org] since 2023, and people are running snapshot/RC builds on a similar model MR5500.

Looks like these routers are about 4 years old. Per Linksys, the MX5503 and the AX5300 are the same. Specifically, the AX5300 here refers to the MX55EC3 model that was sold through Best Buy. While the product is no longer sold by Best Buy, the product related Specs, Q&A and Reviews are still accessible. Find them at https://www.bestbuy.com/site/link...Id=6474691

Here's the first question in the Q&A section and the answer from Linksys
What is the difference between the MX55EC3 and MX5503?
They're the same, SamG. The MX55EC3 is just a BestBuy model number.
Has a good 4.2 review score from 331 reviewers. I ordered the AX5300 for the $5 lower price. While the $5 savings is fine, the AX5300 is listed as Factory Reconditioned vs the MX5503 which is listed as refurbished. For me, 'Factory Reconditioned' > Refurbished for $5 more!
