You should still wash the 3L jackets to clean any oils from the membrane - they will cause "wetting out" to happen faster. But remember wetting out is mainly an issue because it decreases breathability. You should stay protected from rain even if the jacket is completely wetted out - you may be wet due to sweat though.

How much longer will/would a true 3L last?
That's the beauty of Patagonia.
They're better built jackets and thus should last you much longer (though you pay more for it at the outset).
But the CRITICAL ADVANTAGE is their Lifetime Warranty which DOES work. You can go into any Patagonia store and hand them you're peeled up jacket. They will give you store credit for that jacket. Peeling is difficult to repair so they just hand you the Credit. But IF it is repairable (any garment) they'll repair it literally good as new......and you'll get it back FREE in the mail a month later.....And I'm talking about several times personal experience!
