I have this and it works. The case leads a little to be desired but magnet is strong and so far the internals have worked as they are suppose to. Make sure it fits the form factor you need. 2230 and 2242 NVMe only.

This would make so much more sense if it was also a battery. The storage is less impressive if I need to be tethered to a power supply to use it for any extended time. That is the only reason I would need the extra storage.

I just chuck in a USB-C reader at the bottom of my phone that can slot in a micro or SD

Such a missed opportunity to use a right angle UTurn plug at the bottom.

Instead I would opt for this slightly more rugged version by Anker card reader: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D3V8DB7D
It's $25 regular price.

The Anker version was under $20 during the holidays.

It didn't support SSD, don't compare something with less functionality

"Due to power limitations of the phone's USB port, it is recommended to use SSDs with a power consumption of 4.5W or lower. For higher-power SSDs, external power supply via the PD port is required. If the SSD power draw exceeds the limit, disconnections may occur, potentially interrupting recording"

Do SSD manufacturers typically list the power consumption of their M.2 SSDs? Seems like you won't need external power when using microSD/SD cards, but will run into power issues if the SSD is power hungry.

What kind of workflow do people use these for? Like sync photos/footage from SLR/mirrorless camera, edit on phone, save to SSD?

In a word "porn" please accept my apology in advance. You have a great question and I am curious as well…I just could not help myself.
