They allow you to use your impact wrench to tighten lug nuts below the proper torque spec on a tire. Once done, then the nut can be torqued down to spec with a proper torque wrench. These are ideal for flat rate mechanics and anyone working in a tire shop. They prevent the over torquing of lug nuts.

I know this is what's advertised. My question is how does this work? Is it supposed to break at that torque or does it have a clutch system to spin idly above some torque? If it's latter, that wouldn't really be reliable.

It's basically just a rod of spring steel. when it reaches a certain torque it flexes under the load and that absorbs the impact of the gun. they only work with impact wrenches, if you use them with a breaker bar it won't limit the torque. Flat rate mechanics love them and trust them more than they should.

Torque Test Channel did an awesome video on how these work. https://youtu.be/JVY0e5sdWx4?si=Ifv0R5c8fINbY3aT

Watched the video. It basically confirmed they don't work. It can be simply explained by mechanics of materials. That torque transmission and dampening would be a function of driver's speed (frequency) and torque. It's totally unreliable.
