I wonder if you could wrap this around your hose bib to prevent freezing? We seem to be getting more frequent deep freezes in Northwest Florida, due to Global Warming.

This is overkill for that purpose. Wrap a small towel around it or buy a cover.

That's actually a good idea. I can't see why it wouldn't work. I wouldn't put it on the plants. I would run it along the bottom and then cover the plants with plant material to keep ice off between the two. It'll make like a little heat dome. Not bad for thinking outside the box.

I have several of "these" of various lengths.

I only live in Houston, but we get about one freeze a year that will kill any of our tropical plants / freeze our pipes. I have a few 6' ones that I use to wrap fruit trees that I have planted that don't like the cold. Then I have a 3ft one that goes to my sprinkler backflow valve. Then I have a 75' one I lay across one section of my plants in the front yard (and then throw a tarp over it).
It's pretty amazing to see the difference in the front yard, where the plants with the heat cable was and where it wasn't. We are talking all the plants survived vs only a few.
I will be buying more (longer ones though) for other "sections" of plants. I would def recommend ones like this where it does have a built in thermostat.

Of course if the power goes out, all of this is worthless. I do have a whole house generator.

Looks like there's another brand on amazon that's cheaper... $8.80 for 24ft... I just bought a few. amazon.com/dp/B0C7MK2RF3?psc=1&smid=A33V0LA7KRMN9P&ref_=chk_typ_imgToDp

So these get warm to the touch but not too hot?

If you're in Northwest Florida, all you need is a faucet cover.
Here's what to do, go to the main faucet control inside your house and turn it off, then open your outside faucet and let all the water drain out completely, now turn that faucet off, and install the faucet cover.
This is what I use up in the Northeast with snow.
