Hit up a Micro Center for this if you have one near you. I picked up 9800x3d with Asus B650 TUF and 32gb DDR5 for $679.

That's incorrect; even at 4k it provides a 10-20% uplift in many modern games: https://youtu.be/5GIvrMWzr9k?si=68_ni7qu4BY__ulY

Not to take away from your and Steven's point, but HUB didn't test native 4K in that vid. It was DLSS upscaled to 4K on balanced which is native somewhere between 1080p and 1440p (1253 to be exact). This was done by Steve because it was considered more real world as most high graphic intensive games wouldn't even hit 60fps with a 4090 at native 4K, regardless of CPU. I'm guessing no native 1440p was included in that testing because (as Steve would probably tell you) it wouldn't show the performance of the 9800x3d over the others because you'd be GPU limited.

While the person you're replying to is being hyperbolic (and likely trolling), it is true that as the scenario becomes more GPU limited, that the difference in performance between say a 9800x3d and 9700x would be felt less.

In the end, as with anything PC performance related, it just depends on how the specific gamer profiles on whether they are going to benefit from all that extra performance that absolutely is there for the product at the top of Ryzen's stack.
What's the consensus top one or two CPUs (if not this) where the primary intended use is for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 (MSFS2024)...in VR? In as close to max settings in VR as possible?

I currently have a 7800X3D, a 5090, 64GB ram, nvme ssd, etc.; wondering if it's worthwhile to upgrade to whatever the current top CPUs are or if I should just wait a bit.

I do not know the detailed specs of your RAM, such as its clock speed and bandwidth, but assuming you have a decent kit, your current "bottleneck" is likely the CPU. I would suggest upgrading it to the 9850X3D.
Will you see a significant increase in performance that clearly justifies the $450+ cost? Probably not for most people. But for someone who already bought a 5090 and 64 GB of RAM, you clearly aimed for a top-of-the-line system, so you might as well upgrade the CPU as well.

You have a top tier rig. Stop looking at upgrades and enjoy gaming on your system.

X3D not worth it at all unless you want to play CS2 at 1080p 900fps.
you are 100% correct. it looks like the 265K is comparable at 4k gaming. and the bundles cost less at Microcenter. you are not buying a semi high end cpu and gpu to play at low resolutions. lots of reviews are showing 40-50 fps gains, yet hide the fact that it's at low rez.

not from what i'm seeing. more like 0% uplift at 4k. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XnLibX5iT24

hilarious that he made a video reading off of graphs. that's just sad. Rofl3

10-20% for more than double the price of a very capable Ryzen 5 or Intel 5 cpu. Nonsense.
I would argue that is a great deal given 10-20% more from GPU power costs a lot more.

That's funny you mentioned 0% uplifts and the 265K, a CPU which provided a negative uplift compared to the previous generation Intel 14700K in gaming.

Here's my exact RAM. [microcenter.com]

Assuming the CPU is the bottleneck and not that memory, is the 9850X3d an appreciable difference vs the 9800X3d? Though I suppose you're right; even if not much difference, if I'm aiming for top of the line system, I'll probably just get the 9850X3d anyway. Or wait until the next gen, whenever that might be. Idk.

i just put together a 9850x3d bundle from microcenter. i havent played around with it yet, but i think the main difference is that these are higher binned chips so you can tweak them for better performance and/or thermal efficiency. if you are planning to upgrade to a high end 9000 series, theres no reason not to get the 9850x3d cos there isnt a big price difference.

You have a 5090? Hell yeah the 98000X3D is an upgrade since you have less of a GPU bottleneck.
