They made navigation easier, and the story a tad more streamlined rather than the 300 side quests. It's a bit of a hit to diehard fans but it doesn't remove from the fun. Enjoy!!!

They made navigation easier, and the story a tad more streamlined rather than the 300 side quests. It's a bit of a hit to diehard fans but it doesn't remove from the fun. Enjoy!!!

However, all of them, including DQVII, have specifically been remade for the modern market to not be as grindy or otherwise hard to get into as the games originally were. As a longtime Dragon Quest fan, I am personally sad that they removed some things from DQVII and am not yet sure that I want to buy it, based on that... but that's because I spent hundreds of hours grinding the heck out of its original release on the PlayStation, which isn't for everyone!
My nerdy concern shouldn't apply to you at all; you won't miss what you didn't experience and the streamlined remake is probably better for you! I think any of them will be perfectly accessible to you as someone coming off of DQXI!
