Memory bandwidth affects raw token output speed, but the Time to First Token is about prompt processing which gets 3-4x speedups from some new matrix multiplication (matmul) capabilities that the M5 cpu introduced to every graphics core. Or as Apple says, they added new 'neural accelerators' to the graphics cores.
Yes, I mentioned those aspects as reasons why someone might want to consider it for smaller models or quantized larger models.
I'm going to wait until the rumored MB Ultra drops, and even the Mac Studio with whichever Ultra processor they decide, likely M5. That'll drive MBP prices down further.

Good deal for that configuration, but it's safe to say that most people buying a $5K MacBook are not on SD.
SD isn't just for cheapskates...

MacBook Ultra sounds crazy. I don't think I want a portable that's going to be running at 240 watts (or lower power with a hobbled ultra chip). I'd rather run my AI on a mac studio accessed by tailscale, keeping my portable a small and quiet 14". My base m1 pro with 32gb is plenty for everything short of AI. Only considering the M5 Max macbook now because I want wifi 7 and I'm a little worried China will take advantage of the current US distraction and move on Taiwan before I get a proper machine for local AI.

You don't have to buy the Ultra to benefit from the downward pressure on the top of the line MBP models.

As far as the Ultra goes, I would reserve comments until real world reviews because Apple might do a great job with power sipping cores handling regular duties.

Yeah... as someone who owns a 16" M5 Max now, the amount of heat its fans put out on sustained max loads is pretty intense. I don't think I'd want a 'MBP Ultra'. I struggle to think of how they could do it without making the laptop substantially thicker and even heavier/denser than the 16" already is. Mac Studio is definitely a better platform for it - maybe they'll refresh the Mac Pro with crazy M5 Ultra configs, too.

That said, M5 Max an absolute beast of a machine yet it still just sips power during 'real-world idle' use, i.e., lots of tabs, chats, and other apps open but not actively stressing the CPU/GPU. Silent and cold to the touch. They somehow made some pretty significant efficiency gains over the M4 Pro/Max - perhaps a result of their new 'fusion architecture'.
I clocked mine at a literal 2-5W, including running a live video stream - depends how it's running e.g. laptop mode with screen, or connected to a thunderbolt dock powering two at/near-4K displays. What's interesting is that display brightness setting can easily consume significantly more power than the rest of the laptop. 'Real-world idle' power use went up to more like 15-19W with max brightness.

48GB is hardly enough to run LLMs, though. I was thinking about the costco deal for a minute, but I want that 128GB and I definitely am not getting the M4 in this deal.
Depends on the LLM.

Anyone needing to do local LLM work. I thought about getting one of these and consolidating my mbp and mac studio. I think i'll wait til the m5 comes to a mac studio consolidating and getting a used air for non power hungry tech work.

Running local AI models
Can I ask why? The models you can run locally are so much worse and slower than what you get for $0.04 per query, unless you are generating images then I would expect you'd buy a 5090 and not a MacBook

Just curious, what kind of use-cases do you do local LLM for? Can you give me some examples?

Isn't running local models better done on a desk top or mac mini?

RTX generally can't run 100b model on a single gpu due to vram limits. While an M5 with large enough unified memory could.

M5's are also far more efficient power wise per watt than a 5090.

Though, anyone who is do serious AI work would pass on both of them get a GDX Spark.
