You will need an external amp to maximize these, so unless you have a stack they won't necessarily sound better than other $100 headphones. If you do have a stack you already know HiFiMan and closed back don't go together. Might make for a talk-worthy gift given it's unique look?

Despite the division around these and the r9d, I find both very pleasant (but I would not suggest them as your only headphone). Amazing with a good tube amp, very punchy.
