The TCL QM8K comes across as a bright-room mini LED TV that delivers strong black levels, vivid HDR, and better glare handling than competing sets in the same price range. It is especially appealing for large-screen viewing, with the 85 inch and 98 inch sizes drawing praise for movie nights and for replacing projectors in regular use. The main caveat is value, since the price has hovered around these levels for months and past sales were notably lower. Upscaling and image processing also trail Sony and LG on standard TV, and bright-room blacks can turn gray in dark scenes.
Common Questions (4)
The price has repeatedly bounced around a baseline of about $3,000, with occasional spikes higher and drops back down. For the 85-inch model, recent lows mentioned were about $2,000 in February and $1,800 on Black Friday, so this deal is not the historical low.
For movies and immersion, a projector setup can feel more cinematic and can beat a TV when the screen is much larger. For everyday viewing and better overall picture quality, the QM8K is the stronger choice, especially in bright rooms.
Yes. The QM8K is described as performing much better in bright rooms, with stronger brightness and glare handling than OLEDs. In dark rooms, OLED still has the edge for black levels, while the QM8K can look grey in strong ambient light.
The 98-inch QM8K can look soft with standard TV and lower-bitrate content because its upscaling and image processing are weaker than Sony and LG. It is still strong for 4K HDR, but on a near-100-inch screen the difference becomes noticeable from normal seating distances.

If you mainly watch 4K HDR or other high-bitrate content, the TCL will likely impress you. However, if you also spend time watching standard TV (like YouTube TV or over-the-air broadcasts), I'd reconsider. The image processing and upscaling just don't measure up to Sony and LG. On a screen approaching 100", weaker upscaling becomes very noticeable, resulting in a soft-looking image, even from about 12 feet away.I tried adjusting every setting, using a wired Ethernet connection, and even relying on external devices like Apple TV and Nvidia Shield for upscaling, but nothing improved the picture enough to eliminate the issue.
The Bravia 9, on the other hand, has been excellent, accurate colors, natural skin tones, and overall superior processing. The Bravia 7 uses the same processor as the 9, so it's also worth considering.
A Tv that much larger is always going to be at a disadvantage for looking at small details
That being said I do think Sony has the best processing, unfortunately its typically about 2X the price when looking at a TCL ( or a Hisense)
I own both a Sony A95L and a couple of Hisesne U8's( H and N)
For the money...the Hisense U8's are crazy good deals
I dont think LG's is in the same class as a top of the line Sony
Unfortunately with the Bravia 7 ,you are giving up a lot of noticeable black level and brightness compared to the TCL QM8
To make that fair you need to compare the same sized TV

From what I can see owning the 98 QM8K and his TV the Sony still has better upscaling on the Bravia 5. 4k hdr was better on the TCL.

Black levels and brightness are on another planet favoring the TCL
Additionally, the Bravia 5 is $1000 more than the TCL in 98" size
according to rtings.com
"The TCL QM8K is a much better TV than the Sony BRAVIA 5. The TCL gets a lot brighter, so it can handle more glare in a bright room, and it has a better anti-reflective screen coating. HDR content looks much better on the TCL thanks to its higher peak brightness and better colors, and its local dimming feature delivers better dynamic range and deeper blacks in a dark room."
I think the Sony bravia 5 is very outgunned by the TCL QM8K

According to rtings.com the bravia 5 is barely better than the non mini LED Sony X90L that was its predecessor
All of this points to the fact that the for the money...the bravia 5 is just not a very good TV.
I dont personally own one
But the rtings statements and comparisons put the TCL Qm8K on a much higher level than the Sony bravia 5. Additionally, the bravia 5 is the same price or higher, than the TCL Qm8K depending on the size
