ughhh this is now at the price where I said I'd pull the trigger on this exact model.

But I haven't done any shopping/research in the last several months. Did any new models (from other manufacturers) emerge that are a better deal than this 65U8QG?

Think this beat out the qm8 from TCL but can't compare Rtings anymore without paying. I've been cross shopping both against the Samsung qn90 but want 85" or more

When did rtings become the final word on tv quality? I often find them to be wrong when I see the sets in person at the store. I especially find them wrong when they say a TCL qm7 is really good so I buy one and take uninstall my old set and transport the qm7 home and unbox and install it and it sucked. My old Samsung had better color and clarity. Rtings has all these tests which quantify these little micro invisible impacts but in reality mean jack you know what. They should probably get commissions from TCL and Hisense since they are probably responsible for selling millions of them. Ever notice the life expectancy of the products aren't mentioned? That wouldn't work if you're pushing products that won't last.....

You make a fair point. I've never owned a TV so I kind of have to rely on others reviews. I've seen people recommend Rtings amd they seem to trust it so I naturally also started trusting it. While your data point that your old TV should not discounted, there's not nearly enough information to say rtings got it wrong. Qm7k is listed as a lower end mid-range TV by rtings. Was your old Samsung in the same category?

Judging televisions in-store is bozo behavior. Either choice is probably fine, but you should not make your decision at the local brick and mortar.

They may not be the final word, but judging TVs on how they look at the store won't work for most people.The lighting is much different than home use, and often calibrated much differently.I find rtings to be very helpful as far as a starting point, but understand it's not the only factor

Well it was a mid tier tv the MU8500. It wasn't even a qled but it has really decent brightness for the time, bought in 2017. What shocked me about the TCL most was the horrible performance of SDR conrent
content. Faces were grainy and unclear. I was constantly recalibrating it especially with 720p content of which there's tons for free on Pluto, Plex, Tubi, and Fawsome. The qm7 was supposed to have all this miniled goodness but even in 4K HDR it seemed that only certain elements were clear and sharp in the overall picture. Upscaling was just terrible. I ended up with Q80C instead which got middling ratings from rtings but it has away clearer picture with excellent upscaling. A lot of people badmouthed the Samsung Qleds of a couple of years ago because they didnt have miniled and crazy nit counts for the price but I found one on sale and its great. One last word on TCL.....they just lost a court case in Germany for claiming some of their TVs were QLED that apparently were not. It doesn't surprise me a bit. This case has been ongoing the last couple of years and not a word from Rtings on the subject....just glowing reviews for TCL products.

You're right its a starting point, but not the final word as I stated. In this forum its the only reviews constantly linked to and held up as a determining factor. Honestly I bought that pos TCL on their recommendation!
Turned out to be a bad move on my part.
