I played this very early on after they were released. Giant open worlds with not much to interact with. Is this game better now after all the updates? Sold my physical copy 2 weeks after I tried but at this price might bite if it's much better now

I'm a fan of the game so much that I bought it on Switch too. I should probably resume the gameplay but the "story" is fairly nonexistent as far as I can tell. It's a resource farming game. Fun to get your ship up and running and go from planet to planet. But I wish there was more interaction with NPC on the various planets. They're all so lonely. And I get some would be this way. Lots, really. But I'll land on plenty of hospitable planets- resources, good weather, etc.- and there won't be ANY other advanced life forms there. Where are the cities? The colonies? That's really my only gripe. There should be cities on some of these planets.

It's almost insane how the devs managed to turn the tables on this one. I remember it stumbled to $10 at some point, but then the game slowly earned its lost respect back, one update at a time.

Absolutely worth the price, even more so if you're a VR player. Not sure why this is listed as "standard edition" since there hasn't been another variant in the nearly decade (!) since the launch editions. Every DLC, every single one for the past 9+ years has been free.

That said, for anyone curious, know what this game is before going into it. It's a resource harvesting/crafting/building game (like Minecraft or Valheim) but set in a scifi environment (but way more fi than sci). There is combat, but it's very simplistic - this really isn't an action game. There is a lot to do - base building, cooking, treasure hunting, shipbuilding - so much so that it's nearly overwhelming but none of the activity systems in the game are very deep (it's shaken off most of its disastrous launch reputation but the major lingering criticism is that the game is "as wide as an ocean but only as deep as a puddle"). Its real beauty is in having infinite scenery to go get lost in - procgen doesn't always roll a winner and many planets are dull, (literally) lifeless duds but you'll occasionally find an absolute gem that takes your breath away (especially in VR). It's a great timewaster that is constantly receiving free content updates, and when the current game is compared to prior updates we've practically playing a sequel at this point.

Some of these posts have to be trolling. Yes, this game has won every labor of love and continued development award you can imagine. Its one of the best long term development stories in the history of games.

During launch it was terrible and nothing really to do besides mining carbon and ferrite dust.
However as of today it's a completely different game, it's incredibly captivating, stunning visuals and you can do anything from building, exploring, questing and more.
