Way better in my opinion. Had many of both Motorola and Samsungs (Power, Plays, A15 A16 ect) in this price range and the Samsungs run way smoother even though in many cases the specs on paper are better on the Rolas.

Great deal for a backup phone, kept in drawer... There, in event your primary is lost, stolen, broken. At the end of the year, eBay the unlocked A16 for what you paid for it, or a couple dollars more.

BTW... I've read that the A16 gets 6 years of OS updates from Samsung.

Not familiar with the TracFone billing structure. Is this good for a year subject to the 1500 limits or is there the monthly cost as well?
This is for the entire year, no monthly billing.
You get the 1500 minutes and 1500 texts and 1.5GB of data and a year to use it
If you run out of any you can add more during the service time.
It should add more service time depending on if you are add a service card I think.
The $20 card will add extra talk minutes and 90 days of service.
I haven't done that in a long time so I'm not entirely sure about how many extra minutes that adds.

I'm sure some of our Slickdeals experts will be able to fill you in with more information on this subject.

I have been with Tracfone for 4 years on this kind of annual plan. The annual plan is good for light users. When you need to add more min/text/data, make sure that you select 'Plans add-ons' instead of 'Service Plans' to avoid plan override since you already have an one-year plan. I have read some horrified stories of plan override and it took a while to get their support to fix. The current add-on prices are: $10 for 500 minutes; $10 for 3GB data, and $5 for 1,000 texts.

Also, if you are new to Tracfone, when you activate your plan with the new phone, you are given 1,000 reward points (worth $10) as a new user. If you have a referral code, you will be given additional 1,500 points (worth $15). You can get a referral code from any existing Tracfone user. The reward points can be used to buy plans add-ons.

I had a Samsung A15 (the previous version of A16) with 128GB ROM and 4GB RAM. It was usable but slow. I just activated a new one-year plan bundled with Moto G Power 2024 (bought from QVC) with 128GB ROM and 8GB RAM. It is a lot faster and smoother. Yes, I did move my phone number along with the remaining min/text/data from my Samsung A15. BTW Moto G Power is much better than Moto G. The 8GB RAM rocks.

If you want to switch to a better phone, you can buy a Tracfone SIM card from Best Buy and contact Tracfone support to switch the device after you activate the original phone with the bundled plan.
They no longer offer 1000 points only 200 spent over 1 hour in phone tonight

Most people don't use Cell Phomes for gaming! 4GB is more than enough RAM even on a 5G phone, and enough RAM for the cameras!
it is it was a moto phone, Samsung has so much bloatware. I have A15 and Moto 5G 2025 both with 4GB ram

After 365 days of paid service, which you are pre-paying for. If you are just buying the phone to farm the plan, you have to leave the SIM in for an entire year if you want to end up with it unlocked.
If I buy this as a spare phone, will it get unlock automatically on the 365th day even if I am not renewing? Or does it requires me to pay an extra month, and then I have to submit a request to unlock after 1 year?

Thanks for letting me know. Wow - they have been lowering the reward points so quickly! The referral points were 2,500 not so long ago and now only 1,500.

According to the policy change in January unlock will now have to be requested. In the past phones were unlocked as long as they met requirements & did not need to still have active service. Going to be a while before anyone knows anything for sure.

While I was walking Camino trail in Spain last year, I had to use my Samsung A15 (4GB RAM) to take photos due to its large SD card storage while my primary phone was tight on storage and had no SD card slot. Since I took many photos while walking, I missed many great moments because it was just so slow to turn on the camera, especially comparing to my primary phone with 6GB RAM. So glad that I replaced Samsung A15 last week with Moto G Power 2024 with 8GB RAM. The camera is a lot faster now.

That's what I understood. You can request unlock on day 366, even the service plan ended at the midnight of day 365 as long as your phone number still stays with Tracfone on day 366. In another word, you cannot port out your number to another carrier before requesting phone unlock.

This happened to a friend of mine last month. He has been with Tracfone for a very long time (at least 6 years) and his phone was activated 3+ years ago. He thought his phone was unlocked. He checked with Tracfone support and was told that his phone was unlocked. Last month he tried to port his number to Mint and half way through the port, it came back and said that his phone was locked. He talked to Tracfone support and was confirmed that his phone was actually locked. For phones activated 3+ years ago with Tracfone, you have to request unlock as unlocking was not automatic then. He never sent in unlock request. But Tracfone could no longer unlock his phone stating that his phone number left their system 30 minutes ago.

Speaking as a phone rep those moto gs are dog crap.Even the newest one is we sell(2025) is junk. The batteries are nice and their ui gestures are cool. But I pick a used a16 over a new moto g 2025. Idk about the 2026 I haven't been hands on with one yet but I'm not optimistic. 3 finger screen shots and shaking to turn on your flashlight are cool though can't understate that lol
I think depends on which Moto G you're talking about:
1. Moto G Play - the slowest.
2. Moto G is a bit better than Moto G Play.
3. Moto G Power with 8GB is better than Moto G or G Play.
4. Moto G Stylus is a bit better than Moto G Power.

I would take the Moto G Power (8GB RAM) over the Galaxy A16 4GB RAM cuz the G Power is faster and smoother especially if you runs too many apps.

Is there anything to consider about this being renewed or refurbished?

Until someone actually gets their phone there's no way to know the condition but it can always be returned if it's not as expected.
A 1 yr TF plan costs more than $40 so it's probably worth it just for the service.

What happened to his phone number? it sounds like it couldn't be ported to Mint? But was the number then returned to Tracfone properly? And if it was, couldn't he just try requesting unlock again?

Didn't buy this phone. With Samsung, don't go lower than the a30 line: A36 currently. The ram in the a16 is the problem. Just not enough these days.
