I have one that looks identical, and was attempting to use it to air out the house after cooking in the kitchen, since we live in the land of mosquitoes and can't open the doors for that. If your fan is actually bringing fresh air in from outside, you'll probably want to get something like a piece of wood or foam that the duct can run through and you can place in a window before pulling the window shut onto it, then open a window elsewhere and let it run for a bit.
