to properly time your application use several informational items.

https://gddtracker.msu.edu/ is a great resource, select the CRABGRASS PRE section

https://www.greencastonline.com/t...emperature is great to give you an idea of soil temps.

watch your local forecasts. IF you see temps that will be below 30 overnight, I wouldn't worry too much about applying too soon. Any freeze will kill any early to sprout crabgrass.
Most people IMO apply WAYYY to early in the spring. I'll easily trade a few early to rise crabgrass plants to have better coverage in August. I'm in NW Indiana and I am not even considering my 1st crabgrass pre-emergent application until at least mid april.

a good baseline to use is apply when you see soil temps reaching over 5 days are about 55 degrees. Too much before that and you are wasting coverage time early in the season that is more beneficial later in the season.

Also consider 2 applications or (split apps) of your crabgrass preventer in the spring. This will provide better coverage and lasting coverage for the season.

Yes. It is too late already for the south.

You can do so much better both cost, value and coverage if you use liquid applications of prodiamine. $75 for a 5lb container that will last you years. Do yourself a favor invest in a liquid sprayer buy a better product and save money in the long term

Crap, I've been waiting for it to not be below freezing to put grass seed down.

The smallest of buds on the trees is a good indicator it is pre-emergant time

Decent price but if you have access to Costco they are running a sale on the 40 lb bag (14K coverage) for $56.

Everything causes cancer in California.... So guess we are all doomed by being around/ingesting/breathing/looking at anything.

This is pendimethalin, with a shorter active duration than prodiamine. Figure 1.5-2x application frequency with this as you determine cost.

I find consumption of lawn care products to be a poor choice for longevity in general.

Wear a mask and sleeves when applying lawn care products. Unless you're frequently rubbing your face on your lawn you'll be fine. And if you're rubbing your face on your lawn you're already not fine.
