Wood chips are widely considered the best mulch for fruit trees, especially when sourced from local arborists or made from young branches (ramial chipped wood). They mimic natural forest floor conditions, improve soil structure, retain moisture, suppress weeds, and slowly release nutrients as they decompose. Leaf mold and compost are excellent nutrient-rich alternatives, particularly when layered under wood chips to prevent nitrogen drawdown.

Straw is effective for strawberries and can be used around fruit trees, but ensure it's seed-free to avoid weeds. Hardwood mulch (like oak) benefits trees preferring neutral or alkaline soils (e.g., apples, pears, peaches), while pine mulch is suitable for acid-loving species. Cedar mulch offers insect-repellent properties due to natural oils, but avoid dyed or colored mulches (red, black) as they may leach harmful chemicals.

Avoid cypress mulch due to sustainability concerns and potential environmental harm to wetlands. Gravel, rocks, and plastic mulch are not recommended for fruit trees as they don't improve soil health and can reflect heat or cause root damage.

Seeing 4 for $10 in the weekly ad over here - prices definitely vary regionally as the OP said 😖

You can check your local ad: https://www.lowes.com/weekly-ad. Scroll to the bottom of the page and find the link for "Weekly Ad" for "Mar 19th - Mar 25th" to check.

My current ad shows a higher price this week and the $2 special price in next week's ad.

Last year, I purchased this deal on April 7th. This offer only runs until Wednesday. Do they do this again or is the timing just a little earlier this year?

I've never done any mulching but I got into growing flowers and was looking to do some this year. Is this a great deal or pretty standard? My Lowes is 4 for 10. I would just get some bulk scoops but I don't have a truck anymore.

Note that you have to look at the next weekly ad, which shows 5/$10, while the current ad shows 4/$10.
Glad I checked since I placed an order for 150 bags for delivery this weekend

How do you check next week ad? I can only see the 3/19-3/25 ad and it's showing 4/$10.

It's in this week's ad. If you scroll down to the mulch and click on a bag, the side window shows 5 for $10, so it's a bit confusing since the main ad shows 4 for $10. It may be an error on Lowe's ad page, but if you show them that ad, Lowe's will probably honor the 5 for $10 price until they fix it, assuming it's a mistake.

$2 a bag is typically the best price of the year. They'll probably go on sale for this price once or twice more in the next couple months but it normally doesn't get any lower

My local ad shows $2.50 per bag. Note that historically the $2 per bag Lowes mulch sale is in April or May. If you're not seeing $2.00 per bag, you may want to wait.
