The Sundara is a bright, very neutral open back planar that stands out for detail, imaging, and bass extension once it is properly powered and EQed. At this price it is widely framed as a strong value, especially compared with models that cost around twice as much. The main catch is power, since it benefits from a dedicated DAC and headphone amp, and the stock tuning can feel light on bass. Fit, treble brightness, and HiFiMan quality control also come up, so it suits listeners who can drive it and tolerate a leaner sound.

Do not waste your time trying to get this to work. The AliExpress website is maddeningly glitchy and you are better off just pay $75 to $100 more getting it elsewhere from a website that works. Do not listen to anyone telling you they got it to work — you will not have similar luck.

I have HD 6xx that I bought a few months ago for $200. I like the 6xx, but how does the Sundara compare -- worth "upgrading" at this price point?

For those still looking into this, I got my pair yesterday and have been testing them pretty thoroughly on my Fiio K13 R2R DAC. I am currently using the stock cable to 3.5mm (4.4mm cable coming soon so I can use the balanced output for more power, not really needed but if you EQ down a lot for certain targets it's nice to have the extra power from this DAC, 2400mW). These are quite good, I did find EQ settings listed on an ASR post and they were a big improvement (IMO) to the stock sound. This is my first planar magnetic but I have listened to tons of DD headphones over the years and compared to many different headphones that you could find in the sub $120 price range there's not much competition (again IMO). Many comments have said that these need a lot of power to use. I would say that you can get by with a nice dongle. I have tested these on both the Jcally 98 max (228mW @32Ohm -only single ended port) and the Fiio KA15 (560mW with balanced out, not tested because no balanced cable-yet) and both were EQed to add a needed bass shelf but they both achieved what I would call acceptable levels in a quiet room. These being open back you might not have the same results in a noisy space. However if you have a desktop DAC with enough power and the ability to EQ these are a slam dunk at this price.

I have the K13 DAC and found Fiio FT1 Pro to sound much better than Sundara. I also own Ananda and FT1 Pro is about as good. Selling Sundara and Ananda.

True, but the FT1 Pros are more expensive, typically 150 to 250. I did find a deal on Aliexpress that puts them at $127 - but it says $584 for shipping! Amazon has them for $220. If they were the same price I would probably agree with you (based on reviews- I haven't listened to them).

Did anyone from Southern California actually manage to order? I wasn't even able to open link/listing in browser. Tried in app, but price is $179 before any coupon and giving can't be delivered to address.

Yes I deleted cookies/data/cache in both browser and app, re-added address on account. Should be marked YMMV at very least or plain dead at this point.

I'm glad to hear someone has actually received theirs; I'm still waiting for mine (SF Bay Area). Any recommendations on a desktop DAC?

I use a Fiio K13 R2R. U have also used the Fiio K11 R2R, about the same tonal quality but the K13 has more features (EQ, Balanced XLR out, etc.). Also the K13 has a much wider soundstage than the K11 but it's also more than twice the price. I like the R2R sound but there are plenty of nice Delta Sigma DACs that have nice headphone output stages, far too many to list here.
