poor reviews on the bags at costco as well. maybe all bagged soil are bad now

Not all. Despite being Walmart's brand, honestly the best lowest priced bagged soil I've ever bought. And I've probably about gone through a pallet worth.

Miracle Gro is honestly pure crap compared to Walmart's. Literal garbage in it. But that sale is also from a year ago, not the current price.
