If these aren't carefully maintained, they do more harm than good for the hummingbirds.

Don't they all ? Fill, they take it all, rinse , wash , air dry and repeat. Texas never ceases to amaze us at their numbers or their appetites.... Fluid doesnt have to be red , som e commercial feeds better than others

Agreed
They seem way less prone to mold. Easier to clean with hotter water too.

I go one step further. I pour in about 1 tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide, shake it, then rinse well

I replace mine every couple of years to avoid contamination. So this is great timing for me. Thanks!

Getting to be that season. Couple weeks 'til we'll see them here. We use glass, but bases are plastic. Gotta keep these clean fer sher. Brush kits come in handy.

We already have hummers here (Texas)! Love them.
We don't like the yellow flowers on our feeders - they seem to attract honey bees. Bees are great but not when you're trying to feed tiny birds. They take over. Plus our feeders hang on our back porch - don't need the bees there.

One side question - how often we need to clean them? Planning to get one..

Also suggest people go with glass. It is easier to clean. I had a mixed batch of plastic and glass in my yard and the hummingbirds loved either. I eventually pitched all the plastic ones because they were just more difficult to clean. Also make sure you get one with a wider opening somewhere on it so you can use a bottle brush.
