Yes and no.

A portable inflator of decent quality is more convenient to use. I use my Ryobi 18v portable inflator for everything instead of my portable tank compressor (like the one at HD) or instead of my shop size compressor. I don't know about the Astro.

With these kind of compressors, you have to carry it out, string an extension cord or a long hose to reach the car, power it up and let the air fill the tank and then connect the hose to start to inflate the tire. Then you have to disconnect from the tire periodically to check the pressure. With a portable inflator, you just connect it and press the go button. My Ryobi lets you set the psi limit and stops there, and some other brands do the same. With tank compressors you have to stop and check, stop and check and then finally you're done. Then when done you have to unplug the cord, coil it up, unplug the hose and coil it up and put everything away. Good luck with all of that if you live in an apt.

So to your question, yes and no.

Basically a toy for inflating balls. 0.65 SCFM is useless for air tools. Extremely loud and starts overheating within 10 minutes. Save your money for a decent compressor

Is this good for topping off car tires every once in a while? I assume it's more reliable than the Astro AI portable inflator?

Worth $37 for car and bike tire maintenance needs. .65 CFM is realistically far too low for most other applications.

Yes that's pretty much what it's designed for.

My dude, it's $37! Did you really see this and come to make that comment on a $37 air compressor?!?! This is a great option to see just how many uses a person might have for a compressor.
